As a Communications Advisor, you will be responsible for creating and implementing communication strategies and tactical plans to meet client needs as well as support the overall objectives of the Calgary Police Service (CPS). You will consult on projects, prepare media strategies for investigations, respond to media inquiries, develop engaging internal and external communications content, as well as support crime prevention and awareness initiatives. Primary duties will include:

- Consult with clients to determine communication objectives, as well as develop and implement strategies or tactical plans to meet those requirements.
- Determine appropriate messaging, audiences, tactics and channels to achieve client communication objectives for internal and external strategies and plans.
- Develop media strategies, news releases and responses to reporter requests that align with client objectives, while maintaining a positive relationship with the media.
- Manage issues and crisis communications to safeguard the reputation of the Service, support operational needs and keep the community and CPS members safe.
- Develop key messages, speaking notes and presentations for senior members of the Service.
- Identify proactive opportunities to highlight the positive work of the Service to the community.
- Provide media training/coaching to CPS spokespeople, as well as mentorship and guidance to junior positions within the Section.
- Potential for after-hours on-call support later in the term for critical-incident communications.

**Qualifications**
- A degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience, including media relations and strategic communications.
- Previous experience in crisis communication is preferred.
- Work experience in a law enforcement or police environment is considered an asset.
- Success in the position requires the ability to handle a high-paced environment with competing demands through efficiency and thoroughness, impact and influence, planning and prioritizing/visionary and service orientation. An effective communicator with a focus on results and the ability to build strong relationships.

**Working Conditions**:Some exposure to graphic and disturbing content contained in police files; responds occasionally to verbally aggressive members of the public on the phone while performing media relations duties. Occasional requirement to be deployed on-scene to critical incidents and events outside the office. In some cases long periods of standing and/or walking, movement of equipment to locations as required as well as field work in a variety of environments.**Pre-employment Requirements**
- An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Location: 5111 47 Street N.E.

Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $40.08 - 53.57 per hour
Days of Work: This position works a 4-day
compressed work week, with 1 week of on-call
in an 8-week rotation.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
