**POSITION: YOUTH COORDINATOR**

**HOUR OF WORK: FULL-TIME, PERMANENT (35 HRS/WEEK)**

**REPORTS TO: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR**

**PROGRAM SUMMARY**:Tsawout First Nation (TFN) is a vibrant and culturally rich community nestled in the heart of the Saanich Peninsula. We are committed to providing comprehensive social services to our members, ensuring their well-being and fostering a strong sense of community. Our Wellness Department plays a pivotal role in achieving these goals, and we are seeking a dedicated Youth Worker.

**:The Youth Coordinator is responsible for the overall development and implementation of the Tsawout Youth Program for youth ages 13 - 17 years of age in a manner consistent with the mission, mandate and goals of Tsawout First Nation (TFN).

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Establishes rapport and works effectively with youth, and youth who may be overcoming substance misuse/abuse issues; demonstrates broad based knowledge of the family and social issues that First Nation youth face, including the intergenerational impacts of the residential school system on First Nations families and communities;
- Mentors, coaches and supports youth and encourages greater social inclusion;
- Works with parents and community groups to support youth and the various programs and acts as an advocate for young people’s interests;
- Gathers, interprets and articulates information about community trends and resources as they relate to enhancing the capacity for effective communication (including youth engagement), decision-making and long-term planning related to youth, especially youth who are facing challenges in addictions, mental health and/or justice arena;
- Plans, develops, facilitates, supervises and evaluates recreational, social and educational programs, youth groups, workshops and services that support the positive cultural identity and personal wellness for the youth of the community;
- Assesses opportunities and facilitate inter-departmental collaboration as well as inter-organizational collaboration to ensure effective and efficient youth programming and policy development;
- Informs the Governance Admin. Support of significant issues affecting the development and delivery of programs and services;
- Assists with the development of program budgets based on needs assessment and manages spending within budget parameters; monitors and oversee financial management of youth development programming;
- Prepares funding proposals including the establishment of work plans and budgets to track third party funding requirements; submits financial, statistical and narrative reports as required by funders and the Governance Admin. Support;
- Collaborates with other team members regarding program development;
- Coordinates fundraising activities including writing reports and conducting presentations.
- Maintains records, reports, budgets and an overall program work plan;
- Ensures recreation equipment is properly used and maintained;
- Meets, liaises and networks with community groups and educational establishments;
- Resolves conflict with program participants or parents; assists in the resolution of issues and complaints and refers them to the Governance Admin. Support when required;
- Promotes safety, health and wellness;
- Respects individual privacy and confidentiality at all times;
- Resolves conflict with program participants or parents;
- Monitors areas of responsibility for opportunities for improvement and innovation and works proactively to implement these;
- Attends departmental meetings and events as required;
- Participates in relevant training and workshops identified by the Governance Admin. Support to enhance program services;
- Ensures that service quality standards are maintained and consistently delivered in all areas of responsibility;
- Develops effective working relationships with clients, families and co-workers by assisting in the resolution of issues and complaints and refers them to the Governance Admin. Support when required;
- Maintains strict confidentiality and exercises sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;
- Presents a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times;
- Promotes a safe work place; ensures that all established safety, sanitation and hygiene procedures are followed;
- Carries out other duties essential to the position as directed by the Governance Admin. Support.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma);
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with children and youth;
- Experience implementing programs and achieving outcomes;
- Experience developing and preparing a variety of written reports, spreadsheets, policies, presentations and other documentation independently and from written and verbal instructions
- Experience preparing funding proposals an asset;
- Experience developing, interpreting and monitoring budgets and statistics an asset;
