Halifax, Canada Herring Science Council Full time

The Herring Science Council is an industry supported research group that has been in existence since 2001 to increase the state of knowledge of Southwest Nova Scotia/Bay of Fundy Atlantic herring. The council is composed of the mobile gear fleet with members throughout Southwest Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Research conducted by the group is collaborative with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and current projects include; acoustic surveys on herring spawning grounds, tagging of live fish to determine migration patterns, larval cohort analysis and oceanographic sampling.

The Aquatic Science Technician will work under the Herring Science Council Biologist on the t-bar tagging project. This project started in 2016 with key objectives of; identifying trends in temporal and spatial habitat use of major herring spawning populations during feeding and spawning, determine if significant changes in distribution and movement of Atlantic herring have occurred in recent years by comparing the results with previous tagging programs and to validate the range of turnover times currently used (implemented in 2018) for estimating the percent of spawning fish remaining on the spawning ground between acoustic surveys.
