**Nature of Position**:
The Youth Care Worker reports directly to the Akoma Family Centre Child & Youth Care
Supervisor. The Youth Care Worker is responsible for administering approved treatment plans
and providing care to residents (ages 3-13) in care of the Minister of Community Services.
Responsible for accurate reporting, file maintenance, crisis intervention and assisting with
developing programs and activities. The facility is a 24/7 operation with residents in two
buildings.
**Required Education**:
Bachelor’s Degree in the Human Services Field and/or Child Care Worker Diploma from a
provincial accredited institution or related and experience may be considered for equivalency.
**Required Knowledge and Skills**:
youth in residential care; ability to work as part of a team; ability to deal with conflict; strong
written/verbal and interpersonal communication skills; effective organizational and time
management skills; knowledge of behaviour management strategies, intervention plans, and
programs; knowledge of issues facing youth in care; and the ability to transfer knowledge of
various behavioural disorders, substance abuse, and mental health disorders to practice; and
knowledge of working with babies, young children and families in crisis.
Must exercise discretion with confidential matters.

Certificates in the following programs are considered an asset: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
(NVCI), Standard First Aid Level C, Cultural Awareness Training, Medication Administration, Fire
Training, WHMIS, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Inhalant Abuse, Stress
Management, Restorative Practices, Food Handlers Safety Training & Early Childhood
