The Health Care Aide (HCA) in Acute works in a Patient and Family Centered Care environment that focuses on meeting the comprehensive and complex care needs of the patients and their families in a home like setting. The HCA will work diligently to enhance the patient’s activities of daily living by providing compassionate patient centered care.

Description:
As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Successful completion and graduation from an accredited Health Care Aide/ Nursing Attendant Program required. Nursing students must enroll on the HCA Directory in order to be employed as a HCA in Alberta. Part of the enrolment process includes the student submitting a copy of their (unofficial) transcript. The HCA Directory is waiving the enrolment fee for these nursing student applicants. Nursing students eligible for employment as an HCA in Alberta must meet the following criteria: Be a Practical Nursing (PN) student currently enrolled in an Alberta program who has completed one year of the program or Be a Baccalaureate Nursing (BN or BScN) student currently enrolled in an Alberta program who has completed two full years of the program or Be a Psychiatric Nursing student currently enrolled in an Alberta program who has completed two full years of the program and the nursing student has completed a continuing care or medical unit clinical placement. The nursing student has some knowledge and experience with medication assistance. Once you have your certificate from the directory, create an ePeople profile for AHS and upload your criminal record check and directory information. The HCA requires the ability to tolerate constant walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching and sustaining posture within a fast-paced unit requiring lifting, pushing, pulling of objects greater than 50lbs.
