Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.
- Nature and Scope:_
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, LifeFlight, the ACP/ICP/PCP (“Paramedic”) is part of the Air medical Transport team which is comprised of paramedics (ACP/ICP/PCP) supporting the EHS LF program with a focus on long-distance inter-facility transfers. The Paramedic is accountable for providing clinical care to patients within an aviation and ground transport environment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to direct patient care, patient assessment, stabilization and intervention skills, working under clinical practice guidelines approved by the EHS Medical Director. The Paramedic is expected to execute independent critical thinking skills, in order to deliver appropriate care that is consistent with paramedic’s scope of practice and employment. Responsibilities:
- The position entails, but is not limited to the following:_
- Professional Practice_
- Complies with the College of Paramedics of Nova Scotia (CPNS) Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
- Deliver appropriate patient care within the Paramedic scope of practice and employment.
- Perform patient assessment, stabilization, and intervention skills, working under the ground ambulance standards of care and the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) approved by EHS Medical Director.
- Demonstrate the ability to deliver efficient and effective patient care within a confined space, such as a fixed wing aircraft, in a manner that ensures the safety of the patient and the transport team.
- Demonstrate the ability to operate equipment in a manner that is appropriate and safe.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of all communications equipment and ensures professional interaction with all recipients.
- Participate in the completion of an accurate Patient Care Report (PCR) within required time limits. Will complete all other work-related documentation.
- Ensure that all required medical supplies are present and performs equipment and system checks in preparation and following all transports.
- Maintain and is accountable for their own professional competencies through participation in continuing education sessions, successful completion of required skills training, and clinical exposure.
- Ensure ongoing development and maintenance of own knowledge, skills and abilities through self evaluation, feedback from colleagues and supervisors, and identification of learning needs.
- Display capability to make decisions and takes initiative, as needed.
- Comply with EHS LifeFlight and EMC policies and procedures, daily operational procedures..
