Safe Harbour Society provides a low-barrier, housing-driven and recovery-focused shelter that serves some of Red Deer’s most vulnerable individuals. We support Guests by meeting basic needs, building connection, reducing harm, and working collaboratively toward permanent and safe housing. Guided by Safe Harbour’s Seven Stars (Principles) of Truth Telling, Relationship, Peace Making, Listening, Story Telling, Risk Taking, and Compassion, the Rapid Response Team plays a critical role in creating safe spaces, meaningful connection, and client-directed care.
Key Position Overview
The Rapid Response Team (RRT) consists of Primary Care Paramedics and Licensed Practical Nurses who work in collaboration with shelter staff and regulated health professionals to respond to acute medical needs within the shelter and immediate surrounding area. This includes supporting individuals experiencing acute withdrawal, preventing and reversing opioid poisoning, providing monitoring in the designated recovery area, and supporting stabilization and recovery-oriented goals.
As a PCP in this role, you will be responsible for emergency medical care, harm reduction interventions, client engagement, safety planning, and contributing to a collaborative inter-disciplinary environment focused on improving health outcomes for Guests.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to suspected opioid poisoning within the shelter and immediate surrounding area.
- Assess emergency scenes and patients to determine clinical priorities.
Provide wound care to clients
- Administer naloxone, provide BLS airway support, and utilize semi-automated defibrillation as required.
- Ensure emergency response kits are properly stocked and maintained.
- Assess and monitor Guests in the designated recovery area.
- Build rapport and establish engagement with clients in a trauma-informed manner.
- Support client-directed recovery goals through advocacy, education, mentorship and collaboration.
- Provide or facilitate spiritual, cultural, emotional, mental, and physical wellness support.
- Discuss and implement evidence-based harm reduction interventions that reduce morbidity and mortality related to substance use.
- Strengthen team dynamics by advocating for the client, facilitating collaboration, and engaging community partners to enhance outcomes.
- Complete required data collection, documentation, and critical incident reporting as per protocol.
- Maintain a clean, safe, trauma-informed working environment.
Required Qualifications
- Active non-restricted registration as a Primary Care Paramedic in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
- Completed education from an approved recognized program.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP).
- Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Working Environment
This role operates within an emergency shelter environment and requires the ability to work in fast-paced, unpredictable, dynamic situations involving substance use, withdrawal, trauma, mental health crisis, and rapid deterioration. Clinical decision-making, emotional regulation, safety awareness, and adherence to harm reduction best practice are essential.
