The Inpatient Mental Health Program at St. Michael's site is looking for a casual peer support specialist with lived experience of mental illness to engage with individuals receiving episodic hospital-based care. The Peer Support Specialist will be knowledgeable around peer support values and principles and be skilled in offering both individual and group peer support.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provides social, emotional and instrumental support to individuals receiving inpatient mental health care
- Collaborates with the interprofessional team, service users and support network in the development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive care plans
- Facilitates recovery by providing hope, encouragement and self-determination to patients in the Inpatient Mental Health Program
- Shares personal recovery experiences to support and engage individuals receiving inpatient mental health care
- Engages individuals receiving inpatient mental health care about accessing follow-up services available in the community
- Provides a unique perspective for the inpatient mental health team through efforts aimed at bridging the gap between service users and service providers
- Facilitates peer support groups including art-based groups, activity groups and WRAP
- Facilitates 1:1 peer support sessions
- Engages in community outreach visits to support discharge planning and effective community reintegration
- Acts as a role model for service users and educating staff on the service user point of view
- Participates in clinical care planning conferences and team meetings
- Participates in continuous quality improvement strategies
- Participates in research and evaluation activities related to peer support services
- Provides education to stakeholders regarding the peer support specialist role
- Participates in ongoing continuing education

**Qualifications Include**:

- Peer Support related training required **(**WRAP Facilitator Certificate preferred or a willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire)**:

- Past personal mental health system experience required
- Peer Support Canada Peer Support Certification Preferred
- Strong knowledge of local community resources and past advocacy experience preferred
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work well within a team environment, including giving and receiving feedback
- Ability to assume a supportive role in client-worker relationship using the recovery approach
- Interest and/or experience in leading Peer Support Groups (ex: WRAP groups, social skills training groups, peer support groups, recreational outings)
- Interest and/or experience in educational activities to promote the Peer Support role (both within the Health Centre and external community partners)
- Comfortable working with clients in diverse external locations
- Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office, Outlook and a comfort using electronic charting records
- Good attendance record.
