**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**:Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefits and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $46.56-$56.60 per hour ($84,744.44 - $101,197.26 annually).
**PURPOSE**: The purpose of the ts'uwtun/Social Worker is to receive, assess and respond to reports of Smun’eem safety concerns or family requests for services from a preventative, culturally based lens. The ts'uwtun/Social Worker plans with families to mitigate risk and support Smun’eem to remain with their parents, family, and within community. The ts'uwtun/Social Worker supports the Smun’eem’s placement needs and acts as guardian as required under the Snuw’uy’ulhtst tu Quw’utsun Mustimuhw u’ tu Shhw’a’luqw’a’ i’ Smun’eem - “The Laws of the Cowichan People for Families and Children.” The ts'uwtun/Social Worker is a positive and contributing member of Sts'ilh Stuhw tu Smun'eem'. This is a full time permanent unionized position and works primarily in the office, from home, and with moderate local travel required.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Assess And Ensure Smun’eem Safety**:
- Receive service requests from families or youth, and provide referrals for preventative and community based, cultural support
- Receive Smun’eem safety reports and determine appropriate response
- Provide assessment, response and ongoing, preventative supports to families to enhance opportunities for Smun’eem to thrive and succeed within community
- Assess risk of Smun’eem abuse or neglect in the home, including home visits and interviews with those involved
- Develop safety plan to assist families in identifying and mitigating high risk factors and behaviours
- Support families in identifying their strengths and utilize cultural resources to meet the developed goals to support the safety and well-being of their Smun’eem
- Consult with the Manager on all planning and interventions for the Smun’eem and their family, including placements with family members or other care
- Other related duties
**Maintain & Support Child’s Smun’eem’s Placement**:
- Conduct home visits to ensure the Smun’eem’s needs are met
- Provide basic individual counselling, and collaborate with the caregiver/care provider to implement strategies as needed Ensure cultural/strength based approaches are accessible to the Smun’eem and support their participation
- Act as legal guardian of Smun’eem in the care of the CEO
- Develop and update Smun’eem’s cultural care plan
- Refer Smun’eem and youth to internal and external resources
- Other related duties
**Participation on the Team**:
- Attend agency and team meetings
- Participate on the After-Hours rotation
- Prepare court documents, and attend court proceedings as needed
- Case consult with internal programs and other stakeholders
- Ensure proper case management, which includes organizing notes, entering data in Mustimuhw Family Journey data system
- Ensure all relevant documentation is organized in a central location

- **KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies, including the Snuw’uy’ulhtst tu Quw’utsun Mustimuhw u’ tu Shhw’a’luqw’a’ i’ Smun’eem - “The Laws of the Cowichan People for Families and Children.” Youth Justice Act, Family Law Act and other related policies
- Knowledge of family centered preservation and trauma informed practice frameworks
- Knowledge of Smun’eem development with an understanding of the links system issues such as poverty, discrimination, and colonization
- Knowledge of and ability to recognize indicators of abuse and neglect
- Knowledge of Sts'ilh Stuhw tu Smun'eem' internal and external resources and Cowichan community services
- Understanding or willingness to learn Cowichan culture, customs, and traditions
- Knowledge of the history of colonization and the implications for Indigenous children, youth, families, and communities
- Knowledge of professional ethics, principles, and practices
- Ability to work in a multi-faceted work environment with competing priorities
- Ability to communicate in an appropriate manner orally and in writing
- Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to create and maintain respectful and professional working relationships
- Well-developed organizational skills with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines
