As an **Onsite Material Handling Lead & Event Services Crew Member,** you will oversee and coordinate material handling operations at trade shows, conventions, and special events. You will lead a team in the efficient and safe movement of freight, ensuring timely deliveries, proper storage, and organized dock operations. Additionally, you will support the **setup and dismantle of events as needed**, ensuring that exhibitor freight, event materials, and equipment are positioned correctly and safely.
This role requires hands-on leadership, strong logístical coordination, and experience working with material handling equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks. You will act as the **main on-site contact for exhibitors, vendors, and internal teams**, providing guidance on freight handling, setup logistics, and dock operations.
This position is based out of our Halifax, NS branch and requires a flexible schedule, including extended hours, evenings, and weekends, depending on event timelines.
**Key Responsibilities**
- **Lead and oversee dock operations** during event move-in and move-out, ensuring an efficient and organized flow of exhibitor freight.
- **Coordinate and direct a team** of material handlers and event crew members to safely load, unload, position, and store freight at event venues.
- **Manage freight logistics,** ensuring exhibitor shipments are properly tracked, placed, and handled per company procedures.
- **Support event setup and dismantle operations** as needed, assisting with booth assembly, staging, signage placement, and general event infrastructure.
- **Operate and oversee the use of forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment** to transport and position event materials.
- **Act as the primary on-site contact** for exhibitors, providing guidance and support regarding freight delivery, storage, retrieval, and setup logistics.
- **Ensure compliance with safety regulations,** enforcing proper handling procedures, equipment usage, and traffic flow in dock areas.
- **Troubleshoot and resolve dock-related challenges,** including misplaced shipments, scheduling conflicts, and damage claims.
- **Maintain detailed records** of inbound and outbound freight, including documentation for billable services and damage reports.
- **Train and mentor crew members** on best practices for material handling, event setup, and safe work procedures.
- **Collaborate with event managers, logistics teams, and warehouse staff** to ensure smooth and timely event execution.
- **Perform basic equipment maintenance and inspections** to ensure all material-handling tools remain in good working condition.
- **Assist with other event-related duties** as needed to support seamless event setup, execution, and teardown.
**Skills and Qualifications**
- Previous experience in **material handling, dock supervision, event logistics, or warehouse operations.**:
- Strong **leadership skills** with experience managing a team in fast-paced environments.
- Experience operating **forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment** (certification preferred or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to **organize and track freight deliveries** with strong attention to detail.
- Experience with **event setup and dismantle,** including booth assembly, signage placement, and staging.
- Strong **problem-solving skills** and ability to work under pressure in time-sensitive environments.
- Excellent **communication skills** to coordinate with crew members, exhibitors, and event managers.
- Ability to **lift up to 50 lbs** and work in physically demanding conditions.
- Basic understanding of **freight logistics, inventory management, and event setup processes.**:
- **Valid driver’s license** is considered an asset.
- **Flexible availability,** including evenings, weekends, and long hours based on event schedules.
**Preferred Qualifications (Assets)**
- Previous experience in **supervisory or lead roles** in event logistics, material handling, or warehouse operations.
- **Forklift certification** or experience operating material-handling equipment.
- Knowledge of **freight receiving, tracking, and billing procedures.**:
- Experience working in **tradeshow, exhibition, or convention environments.**:
- Familiarity with **transporting event materials** using 3-tonne, 5-tonne, or larger trucks.
**Job Types**: Full-time, Casual
Pay: $19.00-$20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 - 40 per week
