Disabilities Coordinator

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Director of the Paul Menton Centre, the primary duties of the Disabilities Coordinator is to coordinate the provision of academic accommodations, supports, resources and referrals for students with documented disabilities. As a resource person for students with disabilities, the Disabilities Coordinator provides individualized services to a large number of students with a diverse range of needs. The incumbent will have a large and complex caseload of approximately 300 students. This involves evaluating documentation from qualified practitioners, and determining appropriate individualized supports and academic accommodations which address relevant students’ function impairments in the post-secondary setting. The incumbent will also work individually with students to help them acquire compensatory learning strategies, including the use of assistive technology.
The Disabilities Coordinator will promote awareness of the needs of students with disabilities among faculty, support staff and the broader Carleton community.
**Qualifications**:
**The incumbent must possess the following qualifications**:
- Extensive knowledge of psychiatric, medical and learning disabilities and ADHD through advanced course work and significant practical experience: their causes, symptoms and the appropriate means of accommodation.
- Specific knowledge of mental health disabilities and broader issues through direct service provision.
- Experience in one-on-one and group counselling and other mental health interventions.
- Theoretical and practical experience in crisis counselling i.e. suicide assessment and referral.
- Experience screening for mental health disorders and other disabilities.
- Knowledge and experience evaluating psycho-educational assessments.
- Knowledge of issues relating to educational counselling.
- Experience in designing and facilitating workshops.
- Practice and experience in coaching clients in learning, organization, and metacognitive skills.
- Understanding of human rights legislation and institutional obligations as they relate to students with disabilities n the post-secondary setting.
- Theoretical knowledge of and practical experience in program evaluation.
- Knowledge of adaptive technology.
- In-depth problem-solving skills for complex and dynamic cases and for which only individual solutions can be adapted.
- Extensive knowledge of learning theory, counselling theory, metacognitive theory, and learning disability accommodation practice.
- Wide repertoire of study skills at the University level in order to introduce students to various skills/strategies.
- Experience resolving conflicts and problems through informal and/or formal processes.
- Proficient writing skills to interact with faculty and to teach writing to students.
- A combination of tact, empathy, excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, ability to cope with fast-paced office environment and manage various duties.
**Education and Experience**:
**The above is normally acquired through the completion of**:
- Master’s degree in Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology or equivalent, including specialization or course work in conducting psychological or educational assessments, counselling theory and practice, and social science research methodology
- Four years of relevant work experience in a disability service provider capacity, which includes:
- Experience interpreting medical and psycho-educational assessment reports for the purpose of determining appropriate individualized accommodations and support services for students with disabilities;
- Experience in determining appropriate accommodations and support services for students with disabilities on an individual basis that do not undermine academic standards and essential requirements in courses/programs;
- Experience designing and facilitating workshops and working with groups;
- Experience in resolving conflicts or problems through informal and/or formal institutional processes.
