Public Services Assistant

Applications are invited for the position of Public Services Assistant at Thorold Public Library.
Reporting to the Chief Librarian, the incumbentperforms all duties, procedures and policies related to Circulation and Information services.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Performs reference and reader’s advisory service
- Performs all duties and procedures related to Children’s, Circulation and Information services
- Input data and operation of Integrated Library System
- Shelves, shelf-reads and shifts materials
- Open, check in and distribute daily mail
- Processes library materials and adds holdings
- Performs all duties related to interlibrary loan procedures
- Maintenance of photocopy equipment: fill paper, clean glass, change toner cartridge and toner collection bottle
- Perform clerical functions such as typing, photocopying and filing
- Unpack and sort new library materials and deliveries
- Assessing all situations in dealing with the public
- Performs all opening and closing procedures for the Service Desk
- Responsible for maintaining the privacy of personal information and borrowing record of patrons in accordance with privacy legislation
- Other duties as assigned
Equipment used includes microfilm reader, printer, photocopier, Integrated Library System, calculator, laminator, and electronic devices such as ereaders, iPads and tablets.
**Education/Experience**:
Minimum Secondary School diploma along with a minimum of three (3) months experience in library operations or equivalent. Accurate keyboarding skills of approximately 50 w.p.m.
**CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**:
Required to work under general supervision in a public environment involving some periods of visual and mental concentration with frequent interruptions. Good verbal and written communication skills required. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle.

Hours of work are scheduled on a irregular basis with a guarantee of a six (6) hours per week, includes evenings and weekends
