Job Summary

In alignment with emerging societal and industry priorities, the department embraces an integrated systems approach to the mining project life cycle, thereby enabling more sustainable raw materials extraction that is safer and more effective, and which further mitigates social, environmental, and economic impacts. Several established faculty members have active research programs on a variety of themes related to the mining value chain, including Geostatistics, Blasting, Ventilation, Geomechanics, Mine Design, Mineral Processing, Metallurgy, Sustainability and Intelligent Mining Systems. The department possesses world class laboratories for teaching and research in blasting, rock mechanics, and mineral processing.

Reporting to the Department Head, the Department Manager is accountable for the effective management and administration of all departmental operations, and for assisting the Department Head in strategic and operational planning. The Department Manager leads the administrative and technical services of the department, supporting all teaching and research activities, in both graduate and undergraduate programs. Primary activities include financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, human resources management, procurement, facilities management, health and safety management, communications, marketing and coordination of a broad scope of departmental activities and events. The manager serves as a liaison with other administrative units of the university to ensure that departmental operational requirements are met.

**What you will do**:
Operations Management
- Oversees day to day operations of the department
- Oversees administrative and technical support requirements for the Department’s graduate, undergraduate and research programs, and specialized testing services.
- Leads the support staff team of the department
- Plans, prioritizes, and manages the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching. Identifies the need for staff resources, leads staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations for employee selection.
- Manages performance by establishing standards, reviewing and evaluating performance, and conducting formal and informal reviews on an ongoing basis.
- Assesses staff training and developmental needs
- Makes decisions or effective recommendations on matters involving discipline and termination.
- Manages all Health & Safety processes and regulatory requirements, including monthly audits, annual inspections, and safety training requirements (e.g. Online Safety Training, WHMIS, Safety Orientation, hands-on equipment training, chemical and bio-hazard safety), and ensures safety website is current and accurate.
- Acts as the Department Safety Officer and represents the Department on all external safety matters including inspections and investigations by the Ministry of Labour, the Environmental Health and Safety Department (EH&S) and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) Health and Safety Committee.
- Ensures compliance with the University’s OCASP policy for off-campus activities (e.g. professional site visits for students).
- Addresses and resolves safety issues identified by external safety authorities and by the Mining Departmental Safety Committee.
- Collaborates with faculty members on grant proposals, and manages associated design and procurement of equipment, facilities and laboratory renovations
- Assists the Head in all advancement matters including alumni reception events, tours of the facilities, gift funding proposals, donor appreciation, reporting on special gift projects, and expenditures of endowment funds and managing special donor projects.
- Creates a positive work environment that supports and promotes a culture of diversity and inclusion.

Facilities Management
- Manages the operation of a range of facilities including laboratories, machine shops, computing labs, technical shops, collaboration rooms and off-campus sites.
- Manages security and access for all departmental space.
- Manages space assignments, renovations and building maintenance.
- Oversees space needs of the department
- Serves as primary contact and liaison with external service providers as well as the University’s service departments (Physical Plant Services (PPS), Information Technolog
