**JOB TITLE: Legal Support Mentor - 1 year contract (Pilot)**

**DESCRIPTION**:
The Legal Support Mentor has a matrix reporting relationship to the Senior Legal Counsel and the Director of Services. The Legal Support Mentor provides support to the Child Protection teams and Service Managers’ team in prioritizing and supporting the completion of legal documentation required for legal proceedings under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act. This position performs a wide range of legal and administrative activities to support and facilitate effective and efficient legal services. This includes overseeing and assisting with the preparation of various types of court documentation including but not limited to: Protection Applications, affidavits, Status Review Applications, various conference briefs, statements of agreed facts, Informations and Warrants and documentation required for trial or documentation for Summary Judgment Motions. The Legal Support Mentor ensures the timely completion of legal documents that offer an accurate and balanced position of the facts. The Legal Support Mentor will work in collaboration with Service Managers to support their oversight of the quality of legal documentation prepared by protection workers and other agency staff members who may be required to prepare court documentation.

The Legal Support Mentor will also act as a liaison between the Service Managers and the agency legal department to facilitate the appropriate prioritization of work required for legal matters and to act as a liaison between the Court and the Society, including both the legal department and the agency’s child protection teams and the Service Managers’ team.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:
1. Collaborate with Service Managers to help them identify priorities for legal documentation and establish planning systems to ensure documentation is appropriately prioritized for court hearings.

2. Coach, mentor and assist Protection Workers and Service Managers with drafting and review of legal documentation.

3. Support Service Managers in their responsibility to monitor legal deadlines and liaise between Child Protection teams and the legal department and to ensure that court documentation is completed within required time frames.

4. Review Court Reports with workers to ensure that tasks required for the next court hearing are understood.

5. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and community partners.

6. Be fully available to staff by being flexible with time and schedule in order to provide information and service.

7. Utilize technology and information systems to process and retrieve information according to Agency expectations.

8. Keep the Senior Legal Counsel and Director of Service informed of activities and problems arising from our legal work that may have implications for service or legal consequences related to service recipients.

9. Participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and professional development both within and outside the Agency as needed.

10. To review Court Applications and various other court documents, as needed, on behalf of the Society as the Applicant, prior to the Application being filed.

11. To discuss and assist with the training needs of staff in collaboration with the Service Manager responsible for Training and agency legal counsel in the development of annual training on court related matters.

12. Provide coverage and back up to the Law Clerk position.

13. Undertake other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED**:

- Successful completion of a Law Clerk diploma from an accredited community college required
- Membership or eligible for membership in the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario
- 1 year minimum experience in a legal setting preferred
- Experience related to the non-profit or social service sector preferred
- Knowledge of the CYFSA, FLRs, and Strong skills in Microsoft Word as well as a 60% rating on testing

Ability to keyboard at 50 words per minute

Ability to complete direct entry into court documentation programs

Excel skills an asset

Ability to navigate Agency information systems (CPIN, Divorcemate, Court filing systems, legacy systems)
