**Housing Specialist**

Full Time, Term for 1-year and 10 Months

It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit.

The Housing Specialist proactively recruits landlords and property managers to promote TI’s Housing

First program and acquire new apartments for Housing First clients. The incumbent will act as a resource

to the Housing First team and clients on the Rental Tenant Act and Landlord Tenant Board procedures,

including facilitating mediation with landlords when appropriate.

**Responsibilities**:

- Arrange and attend apartment viewings with clients.
- Liaise with landlords to ensure satisfaction with services received.
- Provide coaching to the Housing First team and clients on landlord communications.
- Mediate housing issues and concerns between relevant parties
- Work with the Housing First Team to stay up to date on client housing needs and required.

- Identify private market rental units and build an inventory of available housing options.
- Work with Communications to develop tools to raise awareness of housing programs and
- services (e.g. marketing tools, brochures, newsletters)
- Participate in landlord, property management and home builder network activities to market a
- variety of housing programs and the benefits of working with them
- Provide information to landlords as follows:

- Overview of the Housing First model
- Rental subsidy programs
- Rent direct payments.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for landlords who have tenants receiving Housing Based
- Case Management services
- Maintain a database of procured units, noting geographical area, price, and characteristics.
- including: unit accessibility, proximity to community resources, transportation services, etc.
- Collaborate with housing staff to ensure appropriate housing options are available.
- Act as a resource to staff as clients identify and choose units, negotiate with landlords on the
- initial lease and provide support to resolve any serious tenancy issues that arise.
- Provides crisis intervention and conflict resolution services.
- Refers clients to appropriate internal and external service as required to ensure.

- Inputs all client data into HIFIS and tracks statistical data as prescribed by the funder.
- Organizes and maintains client case files (HIFIS) in accordance with TI’s protocols.

**Education and Experience**
- Minimum college diploma in human services, social work, or similar education or an equivalent
- combination of education and work experience
- Minimum 3 years’ experience delivering urban support services to Inuit preferred.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Knowledge of the local private rental market and the Ontario Residential Tenancies Act
- Knowledge of the Aboriginal and non‐Aboriginal housing support and service system of Ottawa
- Knowledge of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and respect for Inuit culture and values
- Fluency in English is required. Inuktitut language skills are preferred.
- Ability to function effectively in a busy environment and in stressful situations.
- Ability to work independently with a strong sense of focus.
- Task oriented, non‐judging, and maintains a clear sense of client‐service provider boundaries.
- First aid and CPR; non‐violent crisis intervention training
- Outstanding organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Clear vulnerable sector police records check
- Valid Class “G” driver’s license and clean abstract is required.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as required.

**Working Conditions**

The incumbent will spend time in the office for crisis support, on‐site programming and training and will

also attend meetings with clients outside of the office to provide advocacy and support as required.
