**What Would You Do?**
The Humane Education Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering engaging humane education programming to youth and community groups across Oakville and Milton, including in-school presentations, youth programs, March break and summer camps, PA Days, and more. The role includes volunteer training and supervision, animal care support for education animals, and promoting education programs through community events. The Coordinator acts as a role model for children, fosters compassion for animals, and promotes the values of humane education in the community.

**WORKS CLOSELY WITH**: Community Outreach Assistant
**DEPARTMENT**: Community Outreach & Education (COE)
**SALARY**: $24.45/hr
**SCHEDULE**: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, morning/afternoon shifts and afternoon/evening shifts as required. Typically, 2-3 evenings per week to facilitate programming and community group visits. March break, July and August is a Mon-Fri daytime schedule to facilitate camp. Occasional weekend work will be required.
**Responsibilities**:
**Education Programs & School Visits**
- Create, plan, deliver and supervise educational programs for youth and community groups.
- Provide excellent customer service and respond to department-related inquiries in a timely manner.
- Design, create and deliver in-class presentations to elementary-aged children.
- Deliver lessons using a variety of instructional methods: lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities.
- Prepare curriculum-based lesson plans and supporting materials including activities, games and crafts.
- Remain current on curriculum developments and humane education best practices.
- Maintain order and ensure safety during programming, particularly with animal interactions.
- Book guest speakers for children’s programs including Town of Oakville camps.
- Develop and maintain relationships with schools and community partners.
- Meet with parents to discuss participant needs or concerns.
- Work with the Fund Development team to prepare online registrations, and maintain detailed attendance records, paperwork, and monthly reporting metrics.
- Coordinate and track program-related budgets and provide input into department financial planning.
- Ensure education room readiness and support the needs of education animals.
- Represent the organization at community events, acting as a spokesperson for humane education.
- Work in conjunction with the marketing and communications team to promote and advertise programs.
- Oversee the distribution of promotional materials.
- Additional responsibilities as required.
**People & Pets Collaboration**
- Work alongside the Community Outreach Assistant to deliver the goals and objectives of the Community Outreach & Education department.
- Oversee education volunteers and collaborate with OMHS staff to execute programming.
- Hire, coordinate and train summer camp staff and youth volunteer Leaders-In-Training, in conjunction with the Manager, People & Culture and Manager, Volunteer Program & Thrift Store.
- Monitor and ensure animal welfare of education animals during educational sessions.
- Work in collaboration with the animal care team to ensure well-being and care for education animals.
- Participate in all staff meetings and volunteer appreciation events.
- Support the onboarding, training, scheduling and engagement of department volunteers.
- Develop strong relationships with both staff and volunteers.
**Position Requirements/Qualifications**:
- Bachelor of Education Degree, Recreation and Leisure Studies or other related education is preferred.
- 1+ years working with children.
- 1+ years working in a recreation and leisure role or similar, supporting youth programming.
- Experience in program / curriculum development.
- Comfortable handling and working with all types of animals including reptiles.
- Excellent self-motivation, with the ability to complete tasks quickly, efficiently and accurately.
- Excellent collaboration and people skills, and skilled at working within a team.
- Excellent skills in verbal and written communication.
- Proficient decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to use positive and effective strategies to maintain management of large groups.
