Minutes away are beautiful beaches renowned for surfing, bike and hiking trails, lakes and provincial parks. Drive to booming downtown Dartmouth or the historic Halifax waterfront in 30 minutes.
We are currently seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our amazing team The Veterinary Assistant ensures that the patient receives the highest level of customer service upon entry of the hospital to their final interaction. From handling patients during treatments, booking appointments, product education, assisting veterinarians and preparing specimens for reference labs to helping with record completion and filing, the Veterinary Assistant handles all aspects of the clinic.
**Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities**
- Patient Care: _
- Aid in the care of the patient by walking them to examination rooms, talking and calming patients, restraining if needed prior to, during and after treatment.
- Assist Veterinarian in conducting appointments.
- Prepare specimens for reference lab.
- Communicate with and educate owners in a compassionate, tactful, professional manner.
- Educate owners on products and medications sold including dietary products and answer questions regarding product purchase/use.
- Administrative:_
- Update and file medical records as needed.
- Communicate with doctors, technicians and other assistants/receptionists.
- Record necessary information for hospitalized patients.
- Maintain cleanliness of all areas of the hospital.
- Maintain lab equipment.
- Complete appointment bookings.
- Answer the phone and handle incoming patient needs.
**Educational / Certification Requirement**
- Completion of accredited veterinary assistant program (preferred, experience considered)
- 1+ Years Experience in a hospital setting (required)
**Skills/Knowledge/Competencies Required**
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
- Show critical thinking to identify alternative solutions or approaches to problems.

- Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of sterilization techniques to sterilize various instruments and materials.
- Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in the full variety of
treatments.
- Knowledge of AVImark is considered an asset.
**Working Conditions**
This position functions in a patient centric professional environment. This position is physically demanding requiring lifting, standing, walking majority of the day, and is exposed to potential physical harm (i.e. bites, scratches).
**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent
**Salary**: $18.00-$20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 - 40 per week

Work Location: In person
