**How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team**:
The Assistant Environmental Technician is responsible for providing project support related to the planning, design, and implementation of ecological restoration projects. Specifically, the Assistant Environmental Technician will work with the team on terrestrial natural cover projects, including tree and shrub planting, meadow restoration and invasive plant management.
**Major Responsibilities**:
- Provide planting, meadow restoration and invasive species management technical support for the planning, coordination and development of habitat creation and restoration projects.
- Support the preparation of various project correspondence including project briefs and backgrounders, external communications, and reports of a general and technical nature.
- Assist with the field and desktop-based collection and analysis of data to identify habitat restoration opportunities and prioritize restoration actions.
- Aid in the preparation of GIS maps/reports on technical and/or field conditions.
- Support the coordination of daily project logistics, including resource scheduling, external contractors, field staff, vehicles, and equipment.
- On-site mapping and assessments using various digital tools.
- Assist with contractor oversight to verify they are meeting the required scope of work.
- Communicate with internal departments/staff to update corporate database as required.
- Liaise with the public, landowners and staff of other agencies as required.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
**What will you need to succeed**:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Restoration Ecology, or related field.
Experience
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience related to major tasks.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- Knowledge of ecological restoration projects, including meadow restoration and invasive species management, wildlife habitat requirements, environmental regulatory legislation, project management and implementation.
- Excellent native and invasive plant identification knowledge.
- Exterminator license (Landscape, forestry, and aquatic) is a strong asset.
- Experience overseeing crews/contractors.
- Valid Ontario G driver’s licence in good standing.
- Demonstrated orthophoto interpretation.
- Computer proficiency with software experience (MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, ESRI software suite including ArcGIS and Field Maps).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong public relations skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Effective problem-solving skills and leadership skills including staff supervision.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
