Detailed Overview: Reporting to the Coordinator, Access & Bed Utilization, the Bed Booking Clerk maintains bed utilization information; identifies and allocates patient bed assignment of acute care patients; liaises with physicians and appropriate staff; verifies bed availability; performs data entry for discharge/transfer requests; obtains admission information as required. Responsibilities:

- Maintains bed utilization information by reviewing and updating the bed map, waiting lists, patient transfers and discharges at designated site(s).
- Allocates bed assignment by identifying patient requirements, including elective OR slate, checking availability and assigning beds according to nursing unit standards.
- Communicates/liaises with nursing units and other departments within the hospital as well as physicians and other hospitals/agencies, with regard to bed availability, patient placement and bed utilization.
- Communicates with BC Bedline as needed, referring appropriate calls to Access Coordinator or Shift Coordinator. Updates BC Bedline census as per current policy.
- Performs discharges and transfer requests in the computer.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
**Education and Experience**

Grade 12 and three years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

**Skills and Abilities**
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to keyboard at 40 w.p.m.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively with others.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
