**Position Purpose**
Reporting to the Manger, Student Support, provides a holistic approach to case management support for students of concern or students at risk and students with complex needs. Identifies appropriate resources and facilitates the coordination of care and individual support with campus partners and community resources for students experiencing significant challenges to help them achieve their personal and academic goals.
Advocates for access to supports based on the students’ specific needs and collaborates with university faculties, services, associations and community organizations. Coaches students on self-advocacy.
**In this role, your responsibilities will include**
- Advocate and facilitate student access to multiple supports on campus as well as community resources. Serve as point of contact to mobilize support and address students’ needs.
- Intervene in difficult and potentially contentious situations including suicide intervention, crisis management, conflict resolution, case management, and mediation.
- Coordinate transitions and support for students following a leave of absence from their studies to ensure necessary supports are in place. Support includes collecting and reviewing all facts pertaining to the student’s situation, developing a support plan tailored to each specific student and follow-up.
- Engage in systematic follow-up with at-risk students and remains connected to students who take short-term leaves.
- Liaise closely with support personnel in faculties and services. This includes but is not limited to working closely with Counselling Services, Academic Accommodations, Academic Support Service Unit, International Office, Residence Life, Faculties, and other campus and community resources and partners.
- Perform administrative tasks by maintaining accurate case records and a comprehensive database of student concerns.
- Facilitate training sessions for faculty and staff on key topics related to student support such as mental health, trauma-informed care and sexual assault disclosures.
**What you will bring**
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, counselling, education or related field (or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience).
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in post-secondary or closely related settings.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in intervention in difficult and potentially contentious situations including suicide intervention, crisis management, conflict resolution, case management, counselling, and mediation. Experience managing responses to various crisis situations and a range of complex issues (i.e. mental health and illness, behavioral issues, anger management, substance misuse) with youth and young adults in a post-secondary setting.
- Demonstrated ability to relate to students, faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities in ways that build trust and confidence.
- Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behaviour, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students, faculty and staff, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and assist students in navigating through complex systems.
- Ability to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence in the identification and case management of students of concern, adhering to University of Ottawa policies and provincial privacy law.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in an inter professional environment with external agencies.
- Flexibility of working hours will be required to meet student needs which may arise outside of traditional work hours.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and verbal) in English and French.
- Experience in a higher education and knowledge of personal, social, academic and systemic barriers impacting a student’s success.
- Knowledge of academic systems and the requirements for success.
- Comprehensive knowledge of campus and community resources.
