**Our Water Services Department is seeking an Equipment Operator III who will be the primary operator of an excavator and/or backhoe. The incumbent will safely and competently operate the equipment assigned to them as well as perform light servicing of the equipment. When required, the incumbent may operate alternate equipment as directed and perform other manual construction maintenance duties related to the position.**
**You are self-motivated, detail oriented, and have a minimum of 5 years of full-time experience operating an excavator and/or backhoe in the civil construction industry. You have considerable knowledge of safe excavation practices for the installation of pipe, valve chambers, and other underground utility components. You combine these strengths with a strong sense of professionalism, you work well with others, and you have a history of fostering a respectful team environment.**

- Effectively and safely operates any one of the above listed equipment as well as other equipment as required.
- Performs daily inspections of assigned equipment as described in the Metro Vancouver operating manual and as required by WorkSafe BC regulations and Metro Vancouver safety standards.
- Performs light maintenance and operating adjustments of assigned equipment.
- Reports any mechanical deficiencies immediately to the immediate supervisor and garage for corrective action.
- Performs general housekeeping and cleaning of equipment.
- Submits activity reports: timesheets, equipment sheets, daily logs, purchase card records, work orders, etc.
- Attends safety meetings and various safety training courses as required.
- Attends other training as required for position.
- Assists work group performing duties related to the position as required.
- Provides orientation and training to new employees.
**To be successful, you have**:
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent training and experience, supplemented with training in maintenance and construction techniques.
- Minimum five years’ experience working in municipal or regional construction, water and wastewater operations or maintenance.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively carry out written and/or verbal instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment required for position.
- Considerable knowledge of safe excavation practices for installation of pipe, valve chambers and other underground utility components.
- Considerable knowledge of proper methods used in loading, unloading and securing material and equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the different types of aggregates, sand, gravel etc.
- Considerable knowledge of procedures for working safely around above ground and underground utilities and services.
- Understanding of WorkSafe BC regulations and corporate safety policies and procedures applicable to the position.
- Understanding of Metro Vancouver’s policies and procedures applicable to the position.
- Physically capable of performing duties.
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment for extended periods.
- Ability to work unsupervised for extended periods.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
