The Opportunity
The Learning Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the diverse needs of learners within the classroom, school, and community settings throughout Rocky View Schools (RVS). Reporting to the Principal, the Learning Assistant collaborates with teachers to adapt and implement programs for students with complex needs, with a focus on promoting their health, learning, and independence.
The Christian Program is an alternative program offered by RVS. The program focuses on integrating the Christian faith and a Biblical world-view in a public school setting. Responsibilities Include
Under the direction of a teacher, assists students individually by facilitating communication between the student, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, school administration, parents and staff within the school environment by providing interpreting services based on the communication as specified in the student's individual education plan
Prepare for interpreting by becoming familiar with course information and technical language
Maintain an active membership with the provincial and the national interpreting organizations and abide by the AVLIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct
Reinforces strategies as directed by the teacher(s) and identified in Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behaviour Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans, in programming for the diverse needs of the students
Implements behaviour management strategies for students as needed
Contributes to the achievement of students' educational goals and objectives by working with the teacher to create a positive, safe, and optimal learning environment
Education/Experience
Graduate from a recognized ASL-English interpreting program
Educational Assistant Certificate or a certificate from a related field
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Understanding of language implications on the education of deaf and hard of hearing students and competency in adapting to various signing styles along the communication continuum
Experience working or interacting with d/Deaf and hard of hearing persons, especially children
Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of an educational team
Minimum one (1) year experience of interpreting experience preferred
Knowledge and Skills
Demonstrated ability to deal with a variety of complex and sensitive issues professionally and in
a timely manner
Demonstrated ability to carry out the plans and directions of teaching staff to assist students
Ability to build and maintain rapport with students and staff
Ability to adapt to dynamic situations, while successfully managing a high level of stress
Ability to work effectively in collaborative team settings
Excellent multi-tasking, prioritization, and problem-solving skills
Working knowledge of child development
Strong written and verbal communication skills

**Salary Range**: $22.19-$26.52 hourly rate (effective Dec.2/24 this position will move to Group C - $23.87 - $29.00 hourly rate).
An additional allowance shall be paid per bi-weekly pay period, provided you meet the Level III signing qualifications.
