Reporting to the Recreation Programmer or designate, the Inclusion Counsellor is responsible for directly supporting individuals with exceptionalities to ensure their inclusion and personal care in a recreation program setting, while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
**Position Responsibilities**:
- Provide one to one supervision and care of participants with exceptionalities, including physical and cognitive disabilities, behavioral challenges, and/or mental and emotional challenges.
- Assist participants with activities of daily living as needed, i.e. feeding, dressing, toileting, emotional regulation, among other forms of support.
- Develop, plan, organize, and modify specialty instruction to accommodate the participant to ensure an inclusive experience.
- Respond to all incidents, accidents, and emergency situations.
- Serve as a positive role model and leader within your community.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. Enrollment in, or completion of, a post-secondary diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, Personal Support Worker, Child and Youth Care, or Developmental/Community Support Worker, is considered an asset.
- Experience working with children and youth with exceptionalities in a recreation or community environment is considered an asset.
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C.
- Minimum of 18 years of age or older.
- Experience or training in non-violent crisis intervention is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a recreation operation is considered an asset.
- HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Child Development and HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Aging certification or willingness to obtain, an asset.
- Good working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
- Good written and verbal communication, customer service, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
- Physical demands require extended periods of, walking, standing, and climbing, including rough terrain, lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work schedule and shifts as stated. Work outside normal working hours may be required occasionally.
