**Position Description**:
Veterinary Technicians provide specialized technical and clinical services to research staff who house their animals of various species in the LAS facility. Veterinary Technicians are responsible for the health and welfare of the animals in LAS facility with frequent communication with the Clinical Veterinarian and research staff. Their duties may include; animal husbandry, monitoring, treatments, colony management, technical assistance with experimental treatment, sample collection, surgical assistance, health monitoring program, quality assurance, importation and exportation, training of research staff on procedures and other related duties. The work is conducted in a highly regulated environment according to applicable regulatory guidelines and departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

**Here’s What You Get To Do**:
Providing technical assistance and support to one or more of the following areas:

- Management of researcher breeding colonies which could include breeding, weaning, sample collection for genotyping, performing mouse identification, monitoring for specific phenotype or experimentally induced health concerns, maintain breeding records, communication with research staff. Management of in-house breeding colonies and filling of in-house animal orders.
- Animal Health: Under the direction of the clinical veterinarian; assessment of animal health concerns, administration of treatments, monitoring, supportive care, euthanasia, etc.
- Surgical assistance including surgical monitoring and post-operative recovery. Administer, monitor, and maintain anesthesia, provide analgesics.
- Provision of training on various technical procedures. Ensures that researchers are conducting studies according to protocol, reporting any deviations. AUP post approval review, participates in the PAR visit.
- Import and export of animals: Oversees the procurement of all non-commercial research animals, correspondence with users, external institutions and couriers regarding all aspects of the import or export of animals. Receives, performs health checks on incoming mice and packs mice for exports.
- Quality Assurance program: Maintains facility health surveillance program under veterinary supervision, sample collection, submission and record keeping of results. Responsible for performing QA testing for all sterilizers and water testing according to the applicable SOPs.

Provides technical assistance to researchers according to the Technical Assistant request:

- Experimental treatments administered by subcutaneous, intraperitoneal or intravenous injections or by other routes, such as oral gavage.
- Sample collection as required such as blood, urine, and tissue samples.
- Assistance with post-surgical monitoring and monitoring endpoints.

Other responsibilities
- Develops and reviews standard operating procedures pertaining to the assigned area of responsibility.
- Required to perform husbandry duties as required.
- Health & Safety: be familiar with and comply with legislative occupational health & safety requirements and Hospital policies, procedures and safe work practices to ensure health & safety at work.

**Here’s What You Will Need**:

- BA or BSc degree in Animal Science or related discipline, or
- Graduation from a recognized Veterinary Technology program or a certificate from Canadian Association of Laboratory Animals at the RLAT level.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a research setting
- Strong technical skills
- Excellent work ethic and time management skills
- Demonstrated professional attitude, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Able to maintain high standards of detail with excellent record keeping
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Confident in conducting animal handling training courses and imparting technical skills to departmental or lab staff
- Able to detect, analyze, and resolve issues professionally as they arise
