We are looking for an **AVP, Taxation**to join our high performing Taxation department leading the Commodity tax function for Canadian Life Insurance company, and its subsidiaries.

As an AVP/Director, Taxation, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of commodity taxes at CLA and lead a team transformation to be best-in-class. As a mentor and coach, you’ll cultivate a dynamic learning environment, empowering team members to grow.

Reporting to the VP, Taxation, you will oversee compliance obligations, audits, tax recoveries, and tax provisions; work on special projects, risk management, and tax structuring; liaise with lines of business on commodity tax matters.

**Accountabilities**:

- Drive tax compliance, automation, and modernization of department functions, by keeping ahead of key business transactions and bringing a strong voice to stakeholder meetings.
- Oversee the accurate filing of GST/HST/PST Tax returns for Financial Institutions and non-Financial Institutions.
- Oversee the commodity tax budget and provision.
- Manage the Federal GST/HST and provincial PST/QST audits and responses to audit queries in a timely manner.
- Liaise with business units to understand each unit’s strategy and communicate any commodity tax implications. Oversee the research and respond to business unit questions.
- Collaborate with VP Taxation, and other senior management on various special projects to address commodity tax matters.
- Lead special projects to maximize tax recoveries.
- Oversee Commodity tax compliance and provision procedures and risk assessment frameworks, to ensure effective tax management.
- Identify, track and report any potential financial risks or legislation changes and work closely with the management team to implement appropriate solutions.
- Hire, lead and develop a team of tax professionals while driving a high-performance culture and supporting changes within the business as a senior leader within the organization.

**Qualifications and Competencies**:

- A bachelor’s degree in commerce, accounting, taxation or a related field.
- Completion of a professional accounting designation (or equivalent).
- 9+ years of experience in commodity tax, preferably in the Financial Institutions environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships with various individuals within the lines of businesses.
- Completion or currently enrolled in the CPA GST/HST In-Depth Tax Course.
- Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple demands and competing priorities to achieve required results.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and establish priorities to meet tight deadlines.
- Passion for developing others and developing a high-performance culture.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Excel and experience in SAP and tax engine capabilities is an asset.

The base salary for this position is between **$**111,000**:

- $205,500** annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
