Interim Associate Dean, School of Communications

Reporting to the Dean, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Associate Dean is responsible for providing leadership to the faculty, staff and students in our Cross-college English Communications, ESL, and TESOL Plus programs within the School of Communications and Literary Studies (SCLS). This includes leading the development, delivery and review of programs and supervision of teaching and learning processes within SCLS to ensure quality and relevancy of program outcomes. It also includes the planning and administration of resources and the development of industry partnerships and initiatives in collaboration with other departments within the Faculty and College.
The Associate Dean plays a key role in attracting and developing talent, creating an engaging work environment, and managing performance to ensure faculty commitment to quality teaching, professional development and currency in their discipline. He/she contributes to building a strong identity, positive reputation, and a clear sense of direction of programs through educational objectives that are current with industry and community (including Program Advisory Committees and Applied Research projects), effective, relevant to student needs and consistent with the Faculty and College strategic direction.
What You’ll be Doing
Strategic planning for School / Department and actively participating and is instrumental in the development, implementation and leadership of the Faculty strategic plan as part of the academic planning process of the College
Providing academic leadership in the visioning, development, delivery, and ongoing review / modification of existing programs, to ensure quality and reflection of emerging needs, economy, technology changes, market and demographic influences, industry initiatives and employment standards
Liaising on local, provincial, national and international levels to research and develop appropriate linkages or partnerships with the community, governments, educational institutions, business and industry and to ensure appropriate programs and services are delivered
Developing successful School strategies that respond to changes in student audience, government and industry
Fostering and encouraging applied research opportunities and collaborating with appropriate personnel in pursuit of these activities.
Providing academic leadership in the visioning, development, delivery, and ongoing review / modification of existing programs, to ensure quality and reflection of emerging needs, economy, technology changes, market and demographic influences, industry initiatives and employment standards
Facilitating the development of a sense of accountability and commitment to shared responsibility among the faculty and staff of the programs, in particular with regard to the development and administration of programs, and the effective and efficient allocation of resources to address both immediate operational requirements and longer-term priorities of the programs
Ensuring program and course outcomes are met, and are current through effective and collaborative leadership, including: supervision of the teaching and learning processes, effective market research and analysis, and maintenance of close contacts with business, industry and Program Advisory Committees (PACs)
Negotiating with and assigning workload, that supports faculty and School/Department needs and plans, to full-time faculty (in regard to Standard Workload Forms) and part-time contracts

You have sound understanding of project management principles and tools and have the ability to multi-task, prioritize, balance, and manage multiple complex and competing demands.
Post-secondary teaching experience and experience in curriculum development and design
Familiarity with educational technology (preferred)
A sound understanding the challenges, emerging trends, and issues in post-secondary education
Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and student success
Experience in financial budgeting, management, and reporting
Awareness of Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities (preferred)
