We are excited to be growing our team at Georgia Strait Alliance at a time of transformation in our organization. For more than 30 years, we have played a leading role in bringing communities together to address the many threats to the Salish Sea. With a recently renewed strategic plan in hand, with a greater focus on building community power and collaboration, environmental justice and increasing the connection individuals in this region have to this ecologically and culturally important body of water, we are looking for someone who is deeply committed to the vision laid out in GSA’s strategic plan and to playing an important role in our environmental justice and community building journey.
**Position**: Community Organizer
**Compensation**: $50,000 per year
**Location**: Though most of the staff at GSA work from their home offices on the unceded territories of many Coast Salish Nations, the Community Organizer can work in our office on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) people (known as Vancouver) or work remotely from a home office on the South Coast of BC. Note that organizational and program travel will be required.
**Other benefits of working with Georgia Strait Alliance**:
- Full time work environment built around a 4 day work week (34 hours)
- Work in a hybrid work environment that allows you to choose the work-from-home/in-office combination that best suits you and your work.
- Flexible work schedule beyond core organizational commitments
- Our vacation entitlement starts at 2 weeks, increasing to 3 weeks after 1 year, 4 weeks after 3 years and 5 weeks after 8 years
- Support your physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, and caregiving responsibilities by taking advantage of our 5 flexible personal days annually.
- We offer an extended health, vision and dental benefits package, which includes life insurance and long-term disability
- A completely free and confidential employee and family assistance program (EFAP) to assist with counseling, financial advice, nutrition, addiction, childcare arrangements and more.
- Invest in your growth with $500 professional development support for training
**Preferred start date**: as soon as possible
**About the position**
GSA is hiring a Community Organizer who will be responsible for strengthening our grassroots infrastructure and capacity, as well as the links between our organizing efforts and advocacy campaigns. The organizer will be focusing on patiently building relationships in relevant communities, and training grassroots activists, as needed; developing and strengthening our community relationships and partnerships, spending time listening to community concerns in order to help broaden our networks and better reflect the interests of communities we are active in; and developing and implementing organizing tools to support our focus on Southern Resident Orca protection, the removal of open net salmon farms, community engagement in marine spatial planning in the Salish Sea, supporting youth engagement in partnership with the Cowichan Tribe, as well as other issues such as at-risk species protection, stopping fossil fuel infrastructure development, the climate crisis and its community impacts, a mitigating pollution and contaminants, and other threats to ecosystems and communities. This will be accomplished by engaging and connecting communities to our work, as well as mobilizing supporters around strategic asks to decision makers.
The Community Organizer will do a wide variety of organizing work, including volunteer recruitment and management, skills-based training, events planning and consultation, one-on-one check-ins and debriefs, public presentations, and hosting community focused meetings. You will also help build on current internal grassroots infrastructure and systems, working on everything from database protocols to training tools. You will work independently, as well as with stakeholders and changemakers around the Salish Sea (primarily in-person but virtually as needed), as well as working very closely with GSA campaigners and program staff. You should be comfortable traveling and taking many ferry rides. The work will be dynamic and fast paced, with days potentially being very different from one another.
This position works closely with other team members, and reports to the Campaigns Manager.
You will succeed in this role if you are adaptable and organized, able to change focus quickly when necessary while keeping in mind organizational needs and priorities. You are patient, a good listener, outgoing, and are curious about people with a different lived experience than your own. The work can be both challenging and rewarding, and rewards determination, an outgoing individual who loves being in community, and good communication. You should have experience as a grassroots activist and working with others over a long period of time to achieve a
