**Working for the Department of Biochemistry**
The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta has a long and illustrious history dating back to the early 20th century and the ground-breaking research contributions of our first Chair, James Collip, to the development of insulin. Over the last century, biochemical research has expanded to impact diverse areas of human health and disease.
Today, our research spans a broad range of modern biochemical fields including areas like structural biology and biophysics, proteomics, enzymology, membrane protein structure and function, RNA and gene regulation, lipid signaling, systems biology, cell biology and cell imaging.
This research has shed light on fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders (including prion diseases), infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders.
The Di Trani group is a recent addition to the Biochemistry department at the University of Alberta. In this group, we use cryogenic electron microscopy, kinetic analysis, and biochemical techniques to study protein structure and function. Our primary focus is on electron transport chain complexes and other macromolecules involved in bioenergetic processes.
**Position Summary**
The Di Trani group laboratory technician will be responsible for routine maintenance of lab equipment and supplies, carrying out experiments under direct supervision of the principal investigator, and helping train people from the Di Trani group as well other groups.
**Duties**
- Work with PI in designing and conducting both routine and new experimental procedures.
- Prepare common solutions and reagents to meet experimental objectives of lab.
- Present research results at laboratory meetings.
- Help train new summer students, undergraduate trainees, and research fellows in equipment operation and lab procedures.
- Assist trainees and research fellows with technical aspects of their research.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for operation of laboratory equipment.
**Minimum Qualifications**
- At least 6 months experience in a research environment
**Preferred Qualifications**
- MSc preferred due to additional hands-on experience this provides.
- Experience with Protein Purification, Bacterial Cell Culturing, Molecular Biology, PCR, SDS, PAGE, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, Enzyme Kinetics Assays, Western Blot
- Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
