This position will work specifically on research contract matters in coordination with the Research Contracts unit in Innovation and Partnerships 50% of the time. **_*This position is eligible for a Hybrid Work Arrangement*_** **_An employee in this classification is excluded from the bargaining unit as defined in the Labour Relations Code_** **The salary range for this position is**: - **Recruitment range: $72,044 - $89,923 maximum starting salary**is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity. - **Performance range: $103,334**salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases. - Job Summary **Mandate/Core Purpose of Role** The Paralegal - Contracts supports the Office of the General Counsel by providing specialized paralegal services related to contract review, preparation, and coordination. Working under the direction of the Senior Legal Counsel, this role ensures the efficient management of legal documents and supports the University’s compliance with legal, policy, and contractual obligations. **Objective** The Paralegal - Contracts provides paralegal services to the Senior Legal Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel and other departments as directed by Senior Legal Counsel with an emphasis on the preparation, review and coordination of contracts and associated legal documents. The work performed is of an extremely confidential nature, requires the Paralegal - Contracts to work with a high degree of independence with limited direction, and there can be strict deadlines attached to the work. - Job Requirements This position requires a diploma or degree in legal assistant or paralegal studies, or minimum of 3 years relevant work experience. Previous experience in public education and contracts management are highly valued. **Knowledge, skills, and abilities**: - Demonstrated commitment to valuing the principles of truth, reconciliation and respect, equity diversity inclusion and belonging, and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment - Excellent written and communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear and concise summaries, correspondence, reports, presentations, and briefing materials for diverse audiences, including senior leadership. - Exceptional organizational, prioritizing and multi-tasking skills to consistently meet multiple and tight deadlines - Familiarity with legal documents and proficiency with and understanding of the language contained therein - Experience in drafting of legal documents including contracts/agreements, memos, letters of understanding, and similar supplemental documents - Experience negotiating legal documents with counterparties, either with or without the supervision of counsel, including preparing and exchanging redline markups of contracts - Ability to review large volumes of information, identify and analyze issues and prepare summary materials or reports - Excellent attention to detail ensuring a high degree of accuracy and quality of work - High level of initiative and ability to work independently - Proficient with Microsoft 365 and document management systems, with a strong aptitude for learning new technologies. - Ability to maintain confidentiality and/or sensitive information. Extreme discretion and highest levels of integrity, trust, and maturity are essential **Ability to gain the following skills within a period of 6 months**: - Knowledge and demonstrated ability to implement UVic Records Management practices - Ability to use the M365 suite (including and not limited to Teams and SharePoint) to manage, create, and edit documents - Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and governance most relevant to the regular operations of the Office of the General Counsel and Research Partnerships and Knowledge Mobilization (RPKM) - Ability to judge the importance of any given issue or situation and determine the appropriate parties to involve, particularly in instances where the Senior Legal Counsel is not available - Fluency in working with departmental contracts databases and information systems **Competencies**: - Navigating Change/Remain Agile - Adapts to changing business needs, conditions, and work responsibilities - Communication - Communicates effectively
