Classification title: Wild & Immersive Outdoor Educator
Department: Malcolm Knapp Research Forest (MKRF)
Schedule: 35-37.5 hours/week, schedule will include weekends and some evenings.
Wage: $23 - $25/hour

Probationary period: 3 months
JOB SUMMARY
The Wild & Immersive Outdoor Educator is responsible for leading and facilitating Wild & Immersive’s outdoor programs and championing Wild & Immersive’s Forest School program. The Outdoor Educator also prepares for programs and assists in the development of program content, working closely with the Wild & Immersive Coordinator. The program assistant is a qualified and highly motivated individual.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
WORK PERFORMED
- Assisting with the development of curriculum and content for Wild & Immersive programs including forest school, field trips, camps, birthday parties, events, tours, and workshops.
- Leading and growing the Forest School programs.
- Leading outdoor educational programs for youth and adults (field trips and workshops).
- Leading outdoor educational day and overnight camps for youth (Pro-D Day, Spring Break, & Summer).
- Leading outdoor educational birthday parties and events.
- Assisting with the development and organization of programs and camps.
- Ensuring that proper organization and preparation is conducted prior to an event, camp, or program.
- Assisting with the training of the Wild & Immersive team.
- Ensuring program materials are organized, cleaned, and in safe working condition.
- Filling out appropriate documentation for events, camps, and programs (e.g., schedules).
- Brainstorming and creating relevant blog posts for Wild & Immersive’s website.
- Acting as the backup for the Wild & Immersive Coordinator when required.
This position will require physical activity and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
Must exercise judgment based upon a thorough knowledge of procedures, guidelines, and regulations. Must exercise judgment based upon the safety and liability of our team and guests. Incorrect decisions will directly affect the University's and department's reputation with government authorities, community and faculty, staff and students and general public and could require intervention by supervisory and or senior management.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position will receive supervision from the Wild & Immersive Coordinator.
EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE
- A completed degree in an environmentally-related or education-related field.
- Experience working with groups, specifically children.
- Current Remote First Aid Certificate.
- Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract (class 4 considered an asset).
- Current Criminal Record Check.
- Canoe Instructor certificate considered an asset.
- Lifeguard certificate considered an asset.
SKILLS
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Excellent organization skills.
- Strong understanding of childhood development.
- Strong understanding of British Columbia’s ecology.
- Comfortable managing and speaking to large groups.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Comfortable working alone and in team-settings.
**Salary**: $23.00-$25.00 per hour
