Richmond, Canada General Fusion Inc Full time

**Company**:General Fusion

**Location**: Richmond, BC, CANADA

**Position**:Integrated Model Analyst

**About us**:
General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

**Position Overview**:
The Integrated Model Analyst will use and help develop General Fusion’s in-house Integrated System Model (ISM). The ISM is a reduced order code capturing all the subsystems of General Fusion’s Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) compression architecture. This fast code consists of a mixed-dimensionality hydrodynamics and gas network base code, a plasma and magnetics module, and a global optimizer. The goal of the ISM is to guide the current design of the Fusion Demonstration Plant (FDP), as well as the future development of the Commercial Power Plant (CPP).

This position will report to the Computational Scientist Project Lead.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Working closely with the science teams (ISM, fluid dynamics, plasma physics) to understand how the ISM code and its predictions relate to the whole software ecosystem and General Fusion’s simulation activities.
- Performing large-scale constrained optimizations for both the FDP and the CPP.
- Working closely with experimentalists to actively reconcile model results with experimental physical results and using them to improve the fidelity of the models.
- Extending code capabilities and improving prediction fidelity.
- Verifying code predictions against higher fidelity fluid dynamics and plasma codes.
- Taking ownership of the modeling results, ensuring that they meet the needs, in both fidelity and confidence, of company goals.
- Soliciting and following up on technical feedback.

**Relevant Skills and Experience**:
**Education**:
Graduate or Undergraduate degree in Applied Physics, Engineering, or related Science.

**Required**:

- Solid and broad physics background, familiarity with numerical methods
- Strong programming skills (Python fluency, MATLAB/Octave)
- Passion to efficiently communicate complex ideas with technical audiences
- The ability, and innate desire to independently extend their knowledge, and develop expertise in new concepts
- Detail-oriented and proactive
- A positive attitude and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

**Preferred**:

- Computational research experience in applied physics
- Practical knowledge of applied thermodynamics
- Familiarity with constrained optimization problems
- Familiarity with statistical methods and standard data science techniques
- Experience with SciPy and related scientific computing packages
- Familiarity with plasma physics and magneto-hydrodynamics

**Applications**:
We thank all applicants for their interest, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

General Fusion is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment with equal regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, or age.
