Scientist I/ii Bioinformatics
**Role Summary**
As a Scientist I/II Bioinformatics, you will be part of a diverse team focused on advancing iPSC-derived T-cell therapeutics from discovery-stage through scale-up and clinical development. You will provide deep technical knowledge and hands on expertise on analysing NGS datasets (gene editing, genome sequencing, RNAseq, scRNAseq). You have a strong foundation in statistics, scripting and in designing bioinformatics workflows. Highly proficient in R programming, with working knowledge of other languages such as python, perl, Matlab, and shell scripting, and experience working in AWS and Docker environments.
Notch is developing a pipeline of cellular immunotherapies originating from pluripotent stem cells that are specifically engineered to address the underlying biology of complex disease systems. The company has unlocked the ability for large-quantity production of T cells and other cells from any source of stem cells to bring best-in-class cell therapies for cancer and other immune disorders to thousands of patients. The core of the Notch platform is the Engineered Thymic Niche (ETN), which enables precision control of cell fate during the differentiation and expansion of stem cells in suspension bioreactors without the need for feeder cells or serum. The ETN has the potential to generate immunotherapies with decreased variability, increased potency, and engineered improvements. The technology was invented in the laboratories of Juan-Carlos Zúñiga-Pflücker, Ph.D. at Sunnybrook Research Institute and Peter Zandstra, Ph.D., FRSC at the University of Toronto. Notch was founded by these two institutions, in conjunction with MaRS Innovation (now Toronto Innovation Acceleration Partners) and the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM), which initially incubated the company.
**Key Responsibilities**
Designing bioinformatics workflows (such as for amplicon sequencing, GUIDE-seq, rhAmpSeq, whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, genome assembly, methylation sequencing, RNAseq, scRNAseq and CITEseq) with rigorous testing and validation.
Building R Shiny apps to facilitate access to bioinformatics/data analysis workflows by bench scientists.
Effectively communicating results and outcomes to scientists in both quantitative and nonquantitative disciplines.
Defining milestones and create project timelines.
Delivering reports, summaries, and presentations supporting experimental results.
Demonstrating continuous integrity, credibility, and positivity and motivate others to do the same.
**Qualifications and Experience**
**Required Skills**:
- MS/MSc +3 years relevant experience in synthetic biology or PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Biostatistics/Synthetic biology
- Fluency in the R programming language, and particularly with R Shiny.
- Experience using GitHub for version control, and knowledge of best practices for high-performance computing.
- Experience with gene editing related data analysis (amplicon sequencing, GUIDE-seq, rhAmpSeq, whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, genome assembly, methylation sequencing).
- Previous experience in building bioinformatics/data science workflows and automation.
- Working knowledge of cell biology and/or immunology.
- Primary authorship on relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Ability to independently propose, design, execute and report on research projects.
- Self-directed with ability to work independently.
- Team player
- Excellent communication and writing skills
**Preferred Skills**
- Experience with python, perl, and shell scripting.
- Experience working with Luigi for pipeline development.
- Demonstrated ability to develop for and work with data in AWS
- Employment with Notch is conditional upon providing documentation to confirm receipt of both doses of an approved Covid-19 vaccine. Notch will consider exemptions to this requirement based on legitimate medical or religious grounds._
- Requests for accommodation can be made at any stage of the recruitment process providing the applicant has met the Bona-fide requirements for the open position. Applicants need to make their requirements known when contacted._
