As an integral part of the Mackenzie Sawmill Manufacturing Team, the Quality Control Supervisor is responsible to lead all areas of quality control and optimization for the sawmill. This position is responsible to maintain high lumber quality standards within our operations to maximize the return on log yield, chip quality, chip recovery, cut profile, kiln drying process and efficiency, and grade recovery.
**Responsibilities**
- Follow all safety policies and procedures in the mill, role model and lead safety processes to enhance the safety culture and sustain our strong safety record
- Act as a site resource, work closely with, and provide the necessary support to the site Operations Teams
- Leads the execution and delivery of systems that deliver high quality standards that produce and maintain a product that meets Conifex standards.
- Directs Sawmill operations in regard to specifications for sawing, chipping, edging, and piling to maximize lumber recovery
- Works with the Conifex Woodlands group to ensure log quality meets agreed quality requirements in order to obtain maximum lumber recovery and grade recovery
- Design and utilize data collection systems which are essential in the measurement of quality. Collect information on new technologies through experts and others.
- Takes the lead to ensure Sawmill Quality Department maintains effective, ongoing communication to keep teams informed of quality results. Encourage feedback, ideas and solutions for improvement
- Understand the kiln drying process and kiln drying efficiencies.
- Sawmill output moisture management control
- Perform measurement verifications at each machine center
- Document, interpret data and utilize measurement data to drive improvements
- Perform wane and face audits at machine centers
- Communicate findings when the process is producing off quality lumber
- Maintain optimizer set up and perform adjustments as required.
- Work with the Maintenance and operations teams to troubleshoot and correct processes and machinery to verify accurate lumber manufacturing.
- Train operators to identify quality issues and how to perform quality checks associated with their job.
- Verify and audit operator quality check process.
- Provide daily report of activities and any findings/corrections.
- Lead machine center studies that may provide insight into potential for operational and quality improvements
**Qualifications**
- College Diploma in wood science or wood processing would be an asset
- Grading Ticket or ability to quickly obtain a grading ticket
- Good understanding of quality assurance and quality control concepts
- Ability to perform statistical data analysis as it applies to lumber manufacturing and size control
- Energetic, positive, and motivated team player with a desire to learn new tasks
- Strong desire to work effectively in a team environment and learn the overall business
- Possess a high degree of initiative and be able to establish priorities and organize workload
- Detail oriented and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Strong work ethic with exceptional communication skills
- Good mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing basics
- Solid understanding and knowledge of optimization equipment and processes
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Quality Control and Optimization Systems
- Ability to read and interpret gauges, dials, and other machine system indicators to ensure a machine is working properly.
- Experience using Microsoft Office tools at an intermediate level preferred, particularly Microsoft Excel.
