**Support Worker (Relief Staff)**
The shelter Support Worker provides direct support to clients of our Shelter Program in addition to meal preparation and maintaining a safe and sanitary work environment.
**Duties**:
- Complete intake process with new clients according to intake procedures.
- Maintain communication in daily log book and record client activities to ensure effective service delivery by documenting information/observations/impressions which may affect a client’s service plan.
- Provide medication reminders as needed.
- Respond appropriately and effectively to urgent and emergent situations.
- Communicate effectively with clients including active listening and problem-solving.
- Monitor client activities and provide effective intervention in crisis situations.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with staff, volunteers, & clients as part of a team.
- Prepare and serve meals as per the menu provided.
- Maintain a sanitary, safe environment in the shelter at all times by completing required cleaning tasks.
- Report any technical or building maintenance issues in the log book and report to on-call staff regarding urgent building maintenance.
- Report all health and safety concerns in the log book and report to on-call staff regarding urgent safety concerns.
- Take every reasonable precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of clients.
- Perform clerical tasks as required.
- Perform other tasks as required.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
**Conditions of Employment:.**
1. Available to work scheduled shifts and cancelled shifts including evenings, overnights, and weekends.
2. 3-month probationary period.
3. Must have criminal record check complete/pending.
**Hours & Pay Rate**:
Pay will be issued every (2) weeks via Direct Deposit to your bank account.
**Tasks & Reminders**:
- Clean/tidy kitchen, wash dishes and dish rack with bleach if needed; and/or run dishwasher.
- Assess cleanliness of appliances (stove/microwave/fridge) - clean with bleach and hot water as needed
- Throw out expired food/ food older than (2) days - clients may resist this but explain this is our policy.
- Clients are not permitted to store food in fridges or freezers.
- All knives and scissors are to be kept in locked kitchen/office at 60 Prince of Wales, not accessible to clients at any time.
- Do not allow clients in the staff kitchen at any time.
- Clients are not to cook or use knives under any circumstances.
- Change and dispose of garbage as needed.
- Ensure garbage area in clients’ kitchen is sanitary.
- Clean any spills/debris from entrances and stairs as needed. Keep passage ways clear and practice falls prevention.
- Do not provide rides to clients under any circumstances. Do not accept money or gifts, and do not shop for clients unless permitted by Shelter Manager or on-call staff.
- Client visitors are permitted only between the hours of 1pm and 4pm, and only in common areas on lower level.
- Clients are not permitted to have guests in their rooms.
- Staff are not permitted to have visitors at any time during the shift.
- Call Shelter Team Lead for urgent matters.
- Lock doors in areas when you are not present (for example lock the doors in 60 when you are in 58).
**Before leaving**:
- Lock basement, all cabinets
- Ensure coffee, tea, bread, cereal, oatmeal, and condiments are replenished.
- Ensure anything that can be used to cook is stored away in locked cabinets.
- Ensure clients have toilet paper in washrooms
- Complete daily log and note significant events, comments from clients, concerns.
- Return keys to 60 Prince of Wales key box.
**Job Type**: Part-time
Pay: $15.60 per hour
Expected hours: 8 - 32 per week
