The Alberta Children's Hospital is a warm and vibrant workplace where the Spiritual Health Practitioner (SHP) provides service to children and their families site wide: Inpatient Units, Critical Care, Palliative Care and Ambulatory Clinics as well as outreach to The Summit. The Spiritual Health Practitioner (SHP) provides patient-centered spiritual health care: screening, assessment and interventions that address spiritual distress (experiences of loss of meaning and connection in relation to self, others, and what one considers ultimate/transcendent) and that promote spiritual well-being. The SHP responds to the emotional and psychospiritual needs of individuals across diverse spiritual, existential, and religious beliefs, cultural perspectives, and practices using a variety of spiritual care interventions appropriate to their practice setting. These include spiritually integrated approaches to counselling. The SHP contributes to their professional community, participates in peer mentoring, and with appropriate professional development may preceptor Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE) students. Spiritual Care Professional Practice is to be delivered in alignment with and advancement of AHS provincial professional practice standards, frameworks, and guidelines. The SHP contributes to caring for the soul of the ACH, facilitating the integration of a holistic approach to supporting the wellbeing of patients, families and staff.

Description:
The Spiritual Health Practitioner is accountable for providing leadership in the profession for the assigned site(s), consultation, expertise, and direct service delivery in all matters related to spiritual health care in the context of health and care delivered at the assigned site(s). The SHP responds to spiritual health needs identified by patients, families, and staff through a process of spiritual assessment and care. Reflecting a holistic, compassionate approach to care, the Spiritual Health Practitioner advances an evidence based spiritual health care approach within the assigned site(s)/programs inclusive of patients/families, staff, physicians, and volunteers which is integrated into interprofessional collaborative team practice. Spiritual Care Professional Practice is to be delivered in alignment with and advancement of AHS provincial professional practice standards, frameworks, and guidelines. Given the variety of spiritual, religious, cultural, and philosophical beliefs that co-exist within site(s), the Spiritual Health Practitioner encourages respect for individual patient beliefs within the health care team, and also facilitates and supports the involvement of community faith organizations. As a health care professional, the Spiritual Health Practitioner is skilled in providing existential, spiritual, and religious patient care across beliefs, cultural perspectives, and practices and is therefore to be distinguished from religious community visitors whose patient care is circumscribed by the perspectives and practices of particular religious/spiritual communities. May include after hours on call service. Travel may be a requirement of SHPs covering more than one site, e.g., community-based SHPs rural zone SHPs, and SHPs on-call between sites.

**Required Qualifications**:
Spiritual Health Practitioner formal education is comprised of two essential components: both graduate degree and clinical training: Master’s in Theology and/or Spirituality/Religion or a clinically related field with confirmation of educational equivalency obtained from the Academic Assessment Committee of the national professional association, Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels, (CASC/ACSS). 2nd Advanced Level, Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE) with commitment toward certification as a spiritual care practitioner, (CASC/ACSS) within three years.

**Additional Required Qualifications**:
Membership or Associate Membership with Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels, (CASC/ACSS). CASC/ACSS Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner, certification equivalency or eligibility for certification. Connect Care Training and Experience.
