Crisis Intervention Worker

**Job Summary**:
The Crisis Intervention Worker plays a vital role in supporting students’ well-being by actively engaging with them in recreational and communal spaces throughout the school. Rather than working primarily from an office, this role involves being present where students naturally gather - building relationships, providing emotional support, and identifying potential concerns before they escalate. They support students (Grades 10-12. This role focuses on de-escalating crises, ensuring student safety, and promoting a positive learning and living environment.
**3 Positions**:
**1.** Monday-Friday 8:30 - 4:30
**2.** Wed - Saturday 4:00 - midnight
**3.** Friday-Tuesday 4:00 - midnight
**Location**: In person, SouthEast Collegiate, Winnipeg, MB
**Department**: Mental Health
**Reports to**: Mental Health Director
**Employment**: Full-Time (10 Months Sept-June)
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Crisis Response & De-escalation:
- Provide immediate intervention for students in emotional or behavioral distress.
- Use de-escalation techniques to manage conflicts and prevent harm.
- Assess situations and determine appropriate next steps to stabilize students.
**Behavioral & Emotional Support**
- Build trusting relationships with students to help them develop self-regulation skills.
- Assist students in identifying and using coping strategies.
- Implement behavior support plans in collaboration with school staff.
**Collaboration & Communication**
- Work closely with teachers, lodge staff, and administration to support student well-being.
- Guide staff on effective strategies for managing challenging behaviors.
- Maintain detailed incident reports and progress Notes.
- Communicate key concerns to the team.
**Training & Prevention**
- Support training initiatives for staff in crisis intervention and behavior management.
- Help develop and implement proactive strategies to prevent crises.
**Required Skills & Qualifications**
(No formal degree required, but relevant experience and skills are essential.)
- Crisis Intervention & De-escalation
- Ability to recognize signs of distress and respond effectively.
- Experience handling aggressive, anxious, or emotionally dysregulated youth.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and behavioral management strategies.
**Communication & Relationship-Building**
- Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish trust with students & staff
- Conflict resolution skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
**Emotional Intelligence & Problem-Solving**
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to manage difficult situations.
- Quick thinking and the ability to make sound decisions in high-stress moments.
- Strong observation skills to recognize behavioral patterns and triggers.
**Adaptability & Teamwork**
- Ability to adjust approaches based on individual student needs.
- Willingness to work collaboratively with staff
- Openness to learning new intervention techniques and strategies.
- Additional Assets:_
- Training in crisis intervention (e.g., CPI, ASIST, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) Willingness to obtain.
- Experience in schools, group homes, shelters, or youth programs.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check.
This role is ideal for individuals with a background in youth work, behavioral intervention, or crisis support who thrive in dynamic environments and are passionate about helping young people navigate challenges.
**Employees with treaty status under the Indian Act are exempt from federal income tax at SEC.**
