**What does Council do?**:
Effective February 2, 2026, the CLPNA will become the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). At that time, the existing CLPNA Council will become the CLHA Council. The CLHA will be a not-for-profit governing public body under the Health Professions Act to regulate the professions of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Health Care Aides (HCAs) in a manner that protects public interest. The CLHA protects the public by setting standards and processes for LPN and HCA registration, education, continuing competence, complaints, and discipline.

The CLHA Council will consist of 50% Registrant Members who are appointed by the Council and 50% Public Members who are appointed by the Government of Alberta. The Council will be responsible for the overall direction of the CLHA through policy governance. The Council will establish the CLHA's strategic direction within the legislated mandate of public protection.

The Council will be responsible for the health and success of the CLHA. Each Council member will bring a unique perspective; however, there are key skills and abilities that will enhance the functioning of the Council so that it can efficiently perform its legislated mandate. Council members should, individually or collectively, possess the skills necessary to establish an effective competency board.

**Available Positions and Terms**:
The Council is currently seeking one (1) Health Care Aide Member to join effective February 2, 2026 for a 3-year term.

**Regulated Council Member Requirements**:
**Council Members must**:

- Meet at minimum, the base competencies required for the role outlined in the Council Competency Matrix.
- Be leaders (formally or informally) with an interest in the CLHA's mandate of protecting the public through regulation;
- Commit to a 3-year term appointment;
- Commit to at minimum four, 1-2 day, in-person, or virtual meetings each year and any other meetings or events that may be scheduled for a total of approximately 13 days a year. Additionally, are able to do the preparation and reading prior to meetings; and
- Be able to work collaboratively with the Council to govern and create the strategic direction for the CLHA.

**Eligibility**:

- Currently enrolled on the CLPNA's Health Care Aide Directory;
- Is a resident of the Province of Alberta;
- Provides two written references;
- Previous committee or board experience would be an asset.
- is an elected member to federal or provincial public office;
- represents HCAs or LPNs in collective bargaining or in proceedings under a collective bargaining agreement;
- is employed by or elected to a position with a union that represents LPNs or HCAs;
- is an officer or senior employee of a professional association that represents members of a regulated health profession;
- is currently a CLPNA employee or contracted to provide services to the CLPNA or has been an employee or contractor of the CLPNA within the previous two years;
- is employed by or contracted to provide services to another college regulated pursuant to the HPA;
- has been convicted of a Criminal Offense, within the previous 10 years, for which a record suspension has not been granted.

**Expenses**:
An honorarium, travel, accommodations, and meal expenses are covered in accordance with CLPNA policies.

- All applicants will be reviewed and considered by the Appointment Committee.
- The review process may include an interview, request for additional information and a criminal record check.
- The Appointment Committee will recommend eligible applicants to the Council. The Council will appoint applicants to fill vacant Council positions in accordance with the Council’s Competency needs at the next Council meeting.
- Onboarding and orientation will be provided to the appointment member.
