**The opportunity**:
The Department of Plant Science is one of the largest Departments within the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, with 13 full-time academic staff, over 30 support staff positions and 40 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Specializations in Plant Science include Plant Breeding and Genetics, Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology and Crop Protection, and Plant Biotechnology and Genomics. Teaching and Research facilities include a large controlled growth laboratory and greenhouse complex located in the Agriculture Building and a 50 ha experimental site on campus. The Department also maintains a 164 ha research farm at Carman (Ian N. Morrison Research Farm, Carman & Region Facility) (INMRF)
As the sole Technician of the program, this position is responsible to manage field trial operations such as seed sourcing and preparation, planting, spraying, weeding, harvest, and data collection, processing and statistical analysis in consultation and under the direction of the Agronomist-in-Residence. Other responsibilities will include maintaining and harvesting field research plots.
**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:
- Bachelors degree or completion of a Community College course in agriculture related discipline with three years direct experience carrying out field research is required.
- Must have a valid driver's license (Class 5).
- Class 3 license, or willing to acquire is preferred.
- Experience with collecting and organizing agronomic field data and samples, maintaining trial history records, and basic data summary statistics required.
- Experience in special crop production including corn, flax and sunflower will be considered an asset.
- Supervisory experience considered an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Excellent computer and technological skills required. Excellent time management, organizational, problem solving, and communication skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to work with farm machinery and research field equipment safely and efficiently required.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
