Position: Personal Support Worker
Participation House Toronto is a not-for-profit charitable organization providing supportive housing to developmentally disabled adults in the greater Scarborough area. The guiding principle of Participation House Toronto is a belief in, and respect for, the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals with disabilities. In providing services to persons with developmental disabilities, our goal is to provide an opportunity for each client to live in a safe and supportive environment and to participate to their fullest potential in all aspects of community living.
Participation House Toronto is currently hiring part-time support workers for our three sites in Scarborough. Support staff at Participation House Toronto provide our clients with full assistance with all aspects of care and activities of daily living.
Primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Implement the Individual Support Plans and Care Plans for all clients
- Provide hands on support to clients in all activities of daily living, including dressing, bathing, toileting
- Provide additional services to clients including laundry, light housekeeping duties, and tasks to maintain an organized, safe, and homelike environment
- Prepare daily meals and assist clients with feeding as required during meal times
- Ensure client medical needs are being met, including medication administration, documentation, and communicating with medical professionals
- Assist clients with their individualized socialization and communication needs to enable their participation within the community
- Assist clients with preparations for community outings, including booking and confirming transportation
- Accompany clients to appointments and on recreational outings as required
- Develop a positive, supportive relationship with the clients and their families, and respect the client’s individual goals and needs
- Communicate effectively with clients and provide behaviour supports as required
- Manage conflict resolution and problem solving regarding client issues
- Provide assistance to families with issues regarding client care and service delivery
- Participate in recreational programming based on the individual and group needs of our clients
- Adhere to organizational Policies and Procedures and follow compliance objectives of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
- Complete all required reporting and documentation including charting, incident reports, and medication administration records
- Document and report any changes in client health status and undertake necessary steps to ensure client safety and well being
- Advocate for each client to ensure their rights are respected in accordance with the Client’s Bill of Rights
Qualifications for the position should include:
- Personal Support Worker or Developmental Service Worker diploma
- 1-3 years of experience working with clients in the Developmental Services or Long-Term Care sector in a congregate care setting is preferred
- Experience working with developmentally disabled adults or seniors who are non-verbal is an asset
- Valid First Aid and CPR certificate
- Valid non-violent crisis intervention training certificate (Safe Management, CPI) preferred
- Current Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Demonstrated organizational skills, creativity, and high motivation
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Must be able to independently reposition adult clients in bed or wheelchair with the assistance of a ceiling lift
- Must be able to independently reposition/push/pull clients (approximately 40-90kg) using body mechanics
- Job may require continuous walking, use of stairs, stretching, bending, and pushing of wheelchairs
- Fluency in French is an asset
- Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination and adherence to agency vaccination policy required
These are part-time positions with variable shift work, including weekends, overnights, and holidays. Availability is required for day, evening, and night shifts of lengths between 4 to 12 hours. Hours of work will include shifts assigned at three sites in Scarborough. This is a unionized workplace and compensation is commensurate with the Collective Agreement. Starting rate includes the $3 per hour Wage Enhancement benefit provided by the Government of Ontario.
