**About the role**

The role is responsible for the Canadian tax compliance and financial reporting and analysis for certain Canadian companies in the SLF Group of companies, as well as tax automation projects and initiatives.

**What you'll be doing**
- Ensure compliance with all Canadian statutory tax filing requirements including timely filing of corporate, partnership and trust tax returns for certain Canadian companies in the SLF group.
- Review quarterly income tax provisions including current and future tax asset/liability reconciliations.
- Assist with Canadian income tax audits, including the preparation/review of responses to queries and Notices of Objection
- Provide leadership within the Sun Life tax group including supervision and mentorship and training of junior staff
- Tax research and interpretation of the impact of specific issues and/or transactions on SLF and its Canadian subsidiaries
- Provide consultation and tax advice to business unit management/ corporate functions
- Participate in Longview, OneSource and other tax automation projects and initiatives in order to improve processes and workflows.
- Decision Making_
- Decisions are based on consultations with the AVP, Canadian Tax Operations, other Sun Life tax staff, and external tax advisors.
- Decisions relating to people management of direct reports.
- Provide input on courses of action relating to Canadian tax matters and recommend to tax leadership.
- Decisions relating to tax automation projects and initiatives.
- Provide input on policies and procedures for Canadian tax matters and initiatives.

**What you'll need to succeed**

Internal Relationships:

- Technical resources in the tax group
- Other global functional areas within Sun Life Financial
- Relationship with Corporate/Canadian finance and business groups
- Technology colleagues and teams.

External Relationships:

- External tax advisors - coordinate client entity tax preparation / review and confirm conclusions on more complex tax issues.
- Tax authorities - timely responses to requests/queries/audits where necessary.
- Canadian industry associations.

Organizational Impact:

- This role has responsibility for Canadian tax compliance and reporting for activities in Canada (including the Canadian business group, Corporate Capital, SLGI and SLF Inc.) as well as process improvement projects and initiatives.

**What you'll need to succeed**
- CPA accounting designation.
- Completion of the CICA/CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course or Master of Taxation program.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe and tax preparation software programs (Taxprep).
- Strong attention to detail; strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and to meet tight deadlines; strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; strong tax technical knowledge and analytical skills.
