**Permanent Full-Time - Forensic Identification Specialist**

**Position Summary**:
The Civilian Forensic Identification Specialist is responsible for working in conjunction with Forensic Identification Officers, to effectively and efficiently document, collect, and preserve all physical evidence for court, in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act. The Civilian Forensic Identification Specialist will be sworn in as a Special Constable.

**Specific Tasks and Responsibilities**:
Specific Duties:

- Examine crime scenes for fingerprints, footwear impressions, bodily fluids (including but not limited to blood, semen, saliva), hairs, fibers, and any other tangible evidence.
- Identify, document, collect and preserve al physical, impression and latent evidence.
- Ensure continuity of all evidence.
- Search for friction ridge evidence at crime scenes and on seized articles/exhibits.
- Compare and verify crime scene prints to known prints.
- Attend sudden deaths and autopsies as required.
- Crime scene and evidentiary photography (including but not limited to FARO 3D scans, scene documentation using the Polycam phone app and video).
- Attend case conferences and briefings as required.
- Forward evidence for further examination to the Center of Forensic Sciences (CFS) or another designated lab.
- Maintain forensic case files.
- Create photo line-ups for investigating officers as required.
- Prepare friction ridge charts/ PowerPoint presentations for court presentations as required.
- Compare physical evidence.
- Give expert testimony in court in relation to the above duties.
- Prepare evidence for court such as video, photos, charts, and drawings.
- Attend all training as mandated by legislation.
- Conduct community presentations as required.
- Assist SOCO officers with their investigations, which includes the examination of collected evidence.
- Assist in maintaining field and office supplies.

- Preserve and protect crime scenes.
- Recognize, preserve, and properly collect evidence.
- Respond with appropriate urgency.
- Obtain all required information.
- Complete necessary follow-ups in a timely manner

Investigation:

- Exercise observation, problem solving skills to effectively link persons to offenses.
- Ensure acute awareness of one’s surroundings.
- Consult appropriate experts and support services.
- Effectively draw from available computer data
- Maintain accurate and up to date notes.
- Conduct thorough investigations and perform follow-ups as other duties permit.

Court Preparation:

- Exercise organizational and time management skills to complete and submit court disclosure packages and evidence as required.
- Ensure documentation is complete, submitted on time and in compliance with appropriate procedural and legal requirements.
- Effectively liaise with the Crown before and during court proceedings, ensuring that all necessary information is provided, to accurately, objectively, and clearly present the evidence gathered during an investigation.

**Qualifications**:

- Possesses a post-secondary degree/diploma in a related field of study or has five (5) or more years of service with a Canadian police service in the role of a Forensic Identification Officer/Technician.
- Successful completion of the Forensic Identification Course (at the Ontario Police College or equivalent) as required by Adequacy Standards Ontario Regulation 3/99.
- Successfully complete the Forensic Re-certification Examination every three (3) years.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computers and various office software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, NICHE RMS and CPIC.
- Must possess a valid class “G” Ontario driver’s license.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification.

**Assets**:

- Experience with working in a lab or in evidence handling position.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Forensic related software designed to assist with investigations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Criminal Code, Federal Statutes, and rules of evidence
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with the public and other agencies in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Resilient to traumatic scenes, events, and investigations
- Resilient to periods of intense workload.
