The Department of Studio Arts is located in the heart of Allard Hall, a purpose-built building for fine and performing arts designed by Bing Thom Architects. We offer first
- and second-year shared painting and drawing classrooms, individual third
- and fourth-year studios, and 3D spatial practice studios that support mold making, casting, wet clay, installation, performance art, and fibre practices including weaving. Shared Studio Arts spaces include an installation room, critique room, spray booth, woodshop, metal shop, Digital Print center, Technology Centre (for audio/visual loans), computer labs, editing suites, and a stop-motion animation lab. The Department manages a regular visiting artists and scholars program and is currently hosting the first Gene Zwozdesky Artist in Residence.
You will further the development of the Department’s painting courses with consideration to expanded approaches and global perspectives; deliver courses encompassing lecture, technical demonstration, evaluation, critique, and health and safety; teach introductory
- to senior-level painting courses, scaffolding learning outcomes; participate in studio management, liaising with the Studio Arts Technician; collaborate with colleagues to form a vision for the BFA 2D pathway; develop comprehensive curriculum; maintain a robust research and/or creative activity practice as well as active engagement in your field; support the Studio Arts Department through service; and, serve on University-wide, Faculty, and Departmental committees as needed.
You will hold an MFA in Studio Arts, or equivalent (MA or Ph.D.) in a related discipline, and a strong exhibition record in painting. Exceptions may be considered based upon outstanding career achievement, or a combination of education and experience in a relevant area of expertise and will demonstrate the ability to teach at the undergraduate level, with teaching experience at a post-secondary level or equivalent preferred. You will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and an ongoing research and/or creative activity program. Capacity to teach in the Department’s 3D or Intermedia pathways will be considered an asset, as is experience developing curriculum. Demonstration of ongoing positive community relationships, collaboration, engagement with publishing, dissemination, research, obtaining grants, commissions, and/or participation in artist residencies are also considered beneficial.
You should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae; teaching philosophy (~500 words); research and/or artist statement (~500 words); portfolio of 20 images, or links to external media, submitted as one PDF with hyperlinks (please note the committee will preview only 3 minutes of any time-based work, so please indicate the selection you would like reviewed); and, teaching dossier (including recent teaching evaluations, project designs and course outlines, up to 20 samples of student works submitted as a single PDF, or other relevant materials that reflect your pedagogy and experience.
