The Inn of the Good Shepherd provides services with dignity to those who are in need of food, shelter and other essentials. We work collaboratively to develop realistic community awareness of homelessness and provide an important link between housing, people and the resources they need, including (but not limited to) services such as shelter, food, hygiene, mental health support, addictions support, crisis support, housing advocacy and life skills counseling. You as a Relief Worker will provide client support, program support and other related duties at the Lodge.
**Reports to: Program Coordinator**
**Responsibilities and Key Duties**:
- **Client Support**:_
- Support clients
- register, monitor overall well being
- Advocate for client needs
- Assist in identifying potential challenges and provide input
- Engage clients-document background information and history
- Understand issues of the population
- Orient new arrivals to shelter protocols and policies
- Observe and assess escalation levels in order to proactively defuse potentially aggressive situations and respond appropriately
- Assist with problem solving skills and support
- **Program Support**:_
- Work with a team to promote a supportive environment
- Ensure flow of critical information including documentations and shift change to bring forward issues, incidents and occurrences
- Promote a mutually supportive environment that emphasizes collaborative approaches and values the contributions of all members; including staff and clients
- **Related Duties**:_
- Perform day-to-day administrative duties including maintaining database, client intakes, assisting with paperwork
- Effectively de-escalate, diffuse and monitor overall shelter environment for safety
- Ensuring or assisting with meal preparation
- Prioritize in a busy work environment
- Work within a team with staff and supervisors to promote a supportive respectful environment
- Conflict resolution
- Contribute to the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the shelter
- Other duties as required as you may, at times, be expected to preform duties not listed
**Qualifications**
- University/College diploma in Social Service Worker and/or combination of education and related life experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
- Competent on word processing equipment, such as Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Excel.
- Time management skills
- Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under supervision.
- Demonstrates knowledge of Community based resources.
- Possess current First Aid, CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates (preferred)
- Provide an original copy of a Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening secured through the national Canadian Police Information Centre or through a local police detachment
- Support for and an understanding of the purpose and mission of The Inn of the Good Shepherd and the Good Shepherds Lodge.
