**Position Summary**

As a member of the Lambton County Library system, the Public Services Assistant - Youth, supports the work of the Public Services Coordinator - Youth Programs & Outreach by assisting in the development and delivery of programming for library patrons aged 0 - 18 years. The Public Services Assistant - Youth also works with the Public Services Coordinators to assist in establishing meaningful outreach opportunities that support the strategic direction of the Lambton County Library. The Public Services Assistants are responsible for supporting a library service that meets the strategic direction set forth by senior management and Lambton County Council.

**Job Duties & Responsibilities**

**Programming Duties**:

- Assist Public Services Coordinators in making necessary preparations to deliver programming for Lambton County Library's patrons including children and youth
- At the direction of the Public Services Coordinators, develop theme-based story time programs for different age groups
- Maintain a schedule of story time kits and rotate the kits throughout all regions of the Lambton County Library system
- Determine needed supplies or materials for story time kits, and other program initiatives, working in conjunction with the Public Services Coordinators
- At the direction of the Public Services Coordinators, develop theme based seasonal reading programs for those aged 0-18 years in Lambton County
- Create related support materials containing relevant websites, book lists, craft ideas, games and activities
- Support and deliver the centralized programs for youth aged 0 - 18 such as but not limited to the annual Summer and Winter Reading Challenges, Ontario Public Library Week and Family Literacy Day celebrations.

**Outreach Duties**:

- Support the outreach initiatives undertaken by the Public Services Coordinators
- Work with the Public Services Coordinator - Youth Programs and Outreach to identify new outreach opportunities
- Participate in the community’s early literacy initiatives including but not limited to duties such as delivering library programs at EarlyON Child and Family Centres, supporting the library at pop-up EarlyON Child and Family Centres, and attending and/or participating in special events targeted to children aged 0-18.

**Administrative Duties**:

- Contribute input to written reports, and compile statistics as directed
- Maintain necessary corporate files in accordance with the County of Lambton's Records Retention By-law
- Work in conjunction with the Communications Officer to ensure adequate promotion of library programs
- Provide coverage for Public Services Assistant - Adult, as required

**Customer Service / Communication Responsibilities**:

- Represent the library effectively in the community
- Interact pleasantly and courteously with the public, community partners and staff, promoting a harmonious workplace

**Other Job Tasks / Responsibilities**:

- Train library staff to deliver children's reading and story time programs by providing information on such things as program techniques, program format, available materials and ongoing support
- Provide instruction and information to Public Services Coordinators and Library Supervisors and staff on programming techniques, program contents and craft ideas on a monthly basis
- Keep current with trends and practices to maintain necessary skills
- Will be required to travel to various facilities for purposes of employment

**General**:

- Incumbents must keep up-to-date on all relevant legislation, collective bargaining agreements, County Policies and Procedures, etc. ensuring that these are implemented as prescribed
