Accessibility Advisor

**Responsibilities**: Tasks include but are not limited to the following:
- Examines confidential medical documentation to determine appropriate accommodations in both classroom and clinical placement settings for students and residents with disabilities
- Provides ongoing academic support for students and residents with disabilities,
- Presents information about services at orientations
- Arranges training and provides information for students and residents who require assistive technology
- Liaises with NOSM University administration, faculty, program leaders and medical practitioners and psychologists and/or other healthcare providers
- Works with each learner who requires accommodations for a disability, to determine their needs and develop recommendations for academic and clinical settings in collaboration with NOSM University program leaders and administrators
- Monitors implementation of the accommodations and provides ongoing support to learners as needed and is a member of University Accommodations Committee(s)
- Prepares intake information
- Maintains and updates all information relevant to accommodations
- Works collaboratively with Financial Aid to administer and report on relevant bursary funding
- Examines previously received accommodation request documentation (e.g., medical information, psychoeducational assessments) to ensure that it is appropriate; if the learner has no existing documentation determines if an assessment is needed and supports the learner to obtain the needed assessment
- Collaborates with Learner Affairs Officers, appropriate academic and non-academic administrators, faculty and support staff to ensure the learner has appropriate personal wellness support
- Responsible for completion of relevant recommendations, reports and documentation, for review by the supervisor
- Prepares Confidential Accommodation Recommendations
- Professionally deals with persons in emotional distress, crisis or conflict
- Consults with program leaders, faculty and administrators as necessary
- Attends feedback sessions with medical practitioners and psychologists as required
- Attends sessions to present information about relevant procedures
- Annually reviews and renews accommodations recommendations for all NOSM University students with existing accommodations
- Provides learners with the Appeals procedure should an accommodation request be denied
- Keeps accurate and confidential records of all meetings with learners and others
- Responsible for preparing and updating prospective learners about services available for people with disabilities at NOSM University
- Ensures data on accommodations are collected, prepared, and presented in reports.
- Accessibility Advisors participate collegially with other relevant professional staff, such as Learner Affairs Officers as well as Academic Staff. This may include assisting relevant teams and units in the maintenance of links with several academic committees within the University and with other relevant support Units.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- A relevant Master's degree in Counselling, Psychology, Education, or the equivalency of a combination of a degree from a recognized Institution
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- A minimum of five (5) years professional experience in areas directly related to position requirements
- experience working in a clinical environment such as a hospital, clinic, community health clinic
- experience working with learners in academic difficulty and from diverse education and cultural backgrounds
- demonstrated experience in assessing disability related needs and implementing support plans
- demonstrated experience professionally responding to persons in emotional distress, crisis or conflict
- experience working within the legal framework of applicable legislation (i.e. OHRC, AODA)
- Applied Learning Disability Studies Graduate Certificate would be considered a significant asset
**Language**:
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
