Emergency Fleet Supervisor

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Emergency Fleet, the position of Fleet Supervisor - Emergency Fleet is responsible for supervising the maintenance and repairs of light & heavy vehicles and equipment as required. They will oversee mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, outsourcing, purchasing, administrative and asset management related to vehicles and equipment assigned to Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency and Halifax Regional Police.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Supervise the day-to-day operation of off-site equipment maintenance and repairs to Fire & Police vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to projecting resource requirements, equipment requirements, vendor availability, and takes remedial action to ensure that all work is completed.
- Responsible for organizing and approving purchases of required vehicle and equipment parts
- Utilizing Fleet Focus, directs, assigns, and monitors the work of staff and external vendors. Responsible for equipment installation and removal. Deploys staff and approves overtime within budgetary resources and policy.
- Provides Fleet Management with information on any infractions of HRM and/or Fleet vehicle policies and procedures so the necessary action can be taken.
- Responsible for appropriate life cycling of assets including recommendations to the Superintendent of Emergency Fleet, relative to the acquisition and disposal of vehicles and equipment.
- Subject matter expert with respect to Motor Carrier Act, NS Motor Vehicle Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act; responsible for ensuring vehicles are maintained and repaired according to legislation.
- Responsible for the administration of obligations under OH&S: conducts inspections, coaches and informs, develops, and reviews standard operating procedures, takes action in the event of incidents.
- Recruits and makes effective hiring decisions based on human resource policies.
- Assists support staff, collaboratively develops work schedules based on priorities to ensure maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely fashion.
- Develops staff through formal training, work assignments and other experiences.
- Responsible for supporting apprentices to achieve their Red Seal, through work evaluation, establishing development plans and setting performance goals.
- Ensuring consistency within the office through teamwork, sharing of knowledge, resources, and communication, including facilitating regular scheduled shop meetings with their staff.
- Makes effective decisions and applies corrective action, administers corrective actions as required.
- Interprets and applies the collective agreements, conducts investigative and conclusion meetings.
- Promote strong customer service, monitor service performance, and ensure that high standards of customer service are achieved.
- Ability to Act in the Absence of the Emergency Fleet Superintendent and/or other Emergency Fleet Supervisors
- Other related duties as required.
- Responsible for the timely processing of work orders, invoices and the producing of various monthly reports both written and in a computerized environment.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education & Experience**
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Interprovincial Red Seal Truck and Transport Mechanic.
- Minimum of five years (5) years’ experience as an applicable Fleet Maintenance Red Seal Journeyperson.
- Experience with vehicles in a fleet operation, Emergency Vehicle experience considered as asset.
- Good background and knowledge in all aspects of a fleet operation including welding, hydraulics, body, fabrication, upfitting accessories and mechanical repairs.
- Experience with maintenance and repair of emergency fire apparatus vehicles considered an asset.
- Minimum of three (3) years in a Supervisory or Leadership role
- Experience in a unionized environment considered an asset.
- Current First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain.
- Must have Master EVT Fire certification, or willingness to obtain within two years of hire.
- Experience in maintenance of Marine Vessels/ boats would be considered an asset.
**Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Must possess a valid N. S. Driver’s License with a responsible driving record.
- Strong working knowledge of work processes and equipment operation.
- Knowledge and experience with Vehicle Maintenance Management programs/ software, i.e., Fleet Focus, etc.
- Competent with using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and environmental regulations and practices.
- Demonstrated labour relation skills in managing a unionized workforce, considered an asset.
- Knowledge of NFPA Standards that are applicable to Fire Apparatus
