**OUR MISSION**:
To support families and serve children and adults living with developmental delays by:

- Providing quality programs and services which support the development, the independence and the empowerment of adults, children and families.
- Working in partnership with adults, children, families, Society members and members of the community
- Advocating for and developing a full range of community-based services to meet the unique needs of each person and family

**PRIMARY JOB GOAL**:

- Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Life skills worker provides a comfortable environment for individuals with developmental disabilities to learn and practice those skills which are required for healthy, independent living. You work as part of a team to ensure that individuals achieve and maintain personally meaningful goals for independence, community access, and vocational skill development.

**KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Accompany and/or transport clients to activities such as medical or other appointments, shopping, or activities necessary for daily living.
- Assist clients to function more independently in the home and the community. Assist clients with daily life skills, social skills, and/or behaviour management, and offer basic counselling support.
- Teach and assist clients (individual and/or group facilitation) activities such as grooming, basic cooking & nutrition, medication management, money management, shopping, household safety, community safety, and home maintenance skills. Facilitate physical, educational, and vocational activities that are in compliance with the clients’ goals.
- Recognize, analyse and respond accordingly to emergency situations. Inform the program manager of situations/behaviours that may result in a need for outside intervention.
- Ensure that individuals have the opportunity to meaningfully interact with those who are important to them. Where possible, facilitate the involvement of family members and friends in the lives of the individuals you support.
- Identify social, economic, physical, vocational, and educational services in the community to assist with the clients’ needs. Liaise with other agencies and community professionals.
- Ensure that activities are goal related and are appropriate for the needs of the client.
- Participate in assessment, goal setting, and individual support plan development.
- Provide written and/or verbal reports of clients’ daily activities and progress on quarterly reports.
- Perform in all aspects of general administration, hourly invoice submission, report writing, record keeping, and accountability of funds as requested.
- Work with the life skills manager to identify areas of concern and improve service. Provide constructive input and recommendations to improve existing policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Actively practice the Values, Beliefs, and Future Directions of IDS in an ethical, caring, and professional manner.
- Perform other duties as required.

**EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE**
- certificate in human services or a related field (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered)
- minimum of six months relevant experience in a similar environment

**JOB SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
- ability to function efficiently under pressure and manage multiple concurrent demands
- demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the field
- proven ability to make sound, independent decisions
- satisfactory English receptive and expressive communication

- valid first aid with CPR
- other requirements as requested by program manager

**HOURS OF WORK**

40 Hours per week

this position may involve evening and weekend work

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $25.34-$28.15 per hour

Schedule:

- 8 hour shift
- Day shift
- Monday to Friday
