As a Landfill Labourer working with Waste and Recycling, Disposal and Processing Services, you will work at waste management facility sites and will complete disposal tasks as directed by the Landfill Operations Foremen. As a City of Calgary employee, you will contribute within the workforce to support and encourage a cohesive and collaborative culture of safety and respect. These jobs require heavy manual labour to be performed under difficult and unfavourable weather conditions. Primary duties include:
- Move materials and equipment in and around the waste management facility sites.
- Remove litter from the inside and outside site perimeter fencing and grounds.
- Conduct vehicle inspections to ensure proper working order and safe driving and operation conditions.
- Act as facility traffic controller during peak periods.
- Engage with the public and provide exceptional service to our waste management facility customers.
**Qualifications**
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions, and no charges pending, is required.
- Basic computer skills are required.
- High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) will be considered an asset.
- Ability to complete tasks with limited supervision, engage others, and interact with co-workers as well as members of the public based on the City of Calgary 4 Cs essential behaviours (character, competence, commitment, and collaboration).
- Willingness and availability to work in a variety of locations across Calgary, including Spyhill, East Calgary, and Shephard sites.
**Working Conditions**:This position requires the ability to withstand long hours of standing and walking with frequent periods of lifting (up to a maximum of 20kg) at a moderate pace - knees, back, and shoulders must be able to withstand frequent periods of lifting; perform repetitive physical tasks involving walking, bending, stretching, kneeling, pushing and pulling; work on uneven surfaces; work in dusty environment with exposure to unpleasant odours and hazardous waste. This position requires the ability to follow provincial safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment when on the job, including a half-face respirator. The majority of the work will be performed outdoors in all types of inclement weather conditions.**Pre-employment Requirements**
- Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
- Must obtain and maintain a City of Calgary Operator's Permit.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
- Applicants will be interviewed and hired throughout the duration of this competition.
- More than one position will be filled.
**Pre-employment Drug Test**: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.Union: CUPE Local 37
