Waste Program Assistant

Reporting through the Manager, Operations and under the direction of the Waste Program Coordinator, the Waste Program Student assists with the Town’s waste collection, diversion and sustainability initiatives through conducting waste audits and assessments, research, and data analysis. The Waste Program Student works both independently and as a team to promote the Town’s various waste management programs through educating residents about the importance of diverting waste materials. Job Requirements - This position is eligible for the _**_Canada Summer Jobs_**_ grant program. To be eligible, youth must meet the following eligibility requirements:_ - be between 15 and 30 years of age **at the beginning** of the employment period*; - be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and, - have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations - Enrolled in or recently completed education in Post-Secondary diploma in Environmental Sciences, Waste Management or related discipline, and/or equivalent combination of training and experience. - Demonstrated related experience in a public sector environment with an understanding of municipal government and by-law enforcement is an asset. - Knowledge of health and safety regulations, WHMIS, by-laws and procedures. - Demonstrated communication, investigative/research, problem solving and organizational skills. - Ability to work independently with minimum supervision or as part of a team. - Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, contractors, council members and the public for the area served. - "G" Class Driver’s License in good standing satisfactory to the Town of Newmarket.
