**Position: School Counsellor at Purpose Independent Secondary School**

**Location: 502 Columbia St, New Westminster.**

**Hours: Full-Time (35 hours per week)**

The primary role of the counsellor is to provide general counselling and support to the students and their caregivers through the provision of information, resources and assistance at Purpose Secondary School. The School program is part of Lower Mainland Society for Youth and Families, a community-based multi-service organization that delivers a continuum of programs to children, youth and families in the areas of Health, Education, Childcare, Counselling and Skill Development.

Purpose Secondary School is an independent school that serves those students who, for various reasons, find it difficult in the traditional school system.

Along with the other employees of the Society, the person appointed to this position will adhere to the Policies and Procedures Manual.

The counsellor reports to the Purpose Secondary School Principal or in the event of an emergency to the Executive Director.

Come join our innovative “do whatever it takes” school team who bring their hearts to school each day working together collaboratively to support the social, emotional, mental health and learning needs of the students at Purpose Independent Secondary School.

**Key Duties and Responsibilities**:

- To provide general counselling and emotional, social or mental health support to youth attending the school program
- To support students to maintain regular attendance and engagement in their school program
- To be an actively engaged, collaborative and proactive member of the school team
- To be part of the vocational and post-secondary counselling team
- To oversee the implementation of the Grad Transitions program
- To act as an advocate for the student and family by assisting them in finding community services and resources to meet their needs
- To refer students to services where appropriate including the continuum of services offered by the Lower Mainland Purpose Society with the approval of the Principal and Purpose Program Director
- To participate in student case conferences
- To participate in intake meetings of new students when requested by the Principal
- To participate in the development of Individual Education Plans for all students
- To attend Integrated Case Management meetings
- To submit student contact statistics to agency data management staff
- To perform other duties as required

**Position Details**:
**Counselling and Support**:

- Provide students with one-to-one counselling.
- Provide students with short-term crisis counselling.
- Provide group counselling in the form of support groups for either students or parents/caregivers
- Assist students in identifying issues, exploring options, encouraging healthy decision making and promoting follow-up through group workshops
- Provide students support, i.e. Accompany students to court, Ministry of Social Services or clinics where appropriate
- Attend Integrated Case Management Meetings working closely and effectively with community professionals

**Resourcing and Referrals**:

- Remain current on resources inside or outside the agency
- have knowledge of referral procedure, waitlist and availability, consent requirements etc.
- Make appropriate referrals outside the school and assist youth in accessing resources
- Attend all school staff meetings
- Attend workshops and training sessions to enhance skills
- Attend conferences to keep up-to-date on youth issues and network with other professionals to build and strengthen links to other community agencies and resources

**Administrative Duties**:

- Oversee and Maintain Special Needs files
- Complete monthly reports of contacts with students

**Relationship Building**:

- Using an Attachment-based model and trauma-informed practice to develop rapport and trust among students by being available in the school space before and after school, at lunch, on breaks and when appropriate or needed on school outings

**Requirements**:

- Undergraduate degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience
- Master’s degree with 2 years of experience
- Experience working in social service and non-profit settings beneficial.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Clear understanding of and adherence to professional boundaries.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Publisher.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.

**Salary**: $29.00 per hour
